Volleyball Falls, 3-0, in Season Opener to Mercy



Goldey-Beacom, playing its first match of the season with a mix of veterans and newcomers, was handed a 3-0 loss (15-25, 11-25, 15-25) against Mercy at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning hung around against a seasoned Mavericks squad that recorded a 20-10 kills edge over the first two sets.  Goldey-Beacom mustered seven kills in the third set, but could not overcome 12 kills and a .267 hitting percentage from the visitors.
 
Freshman Juliana Malena (Miramar, FL) dished 12 assists in her first match, senior Rachel Cohen (Port Deposit, MD) notched eight digs and junior Piper Nanouski (Chicago, IL) pounded five kills for the Lightning (0-1).
 
Yarianne Gonzalez recorded 22 assists, Larissa Schneid had 10 kills and a .333 percentage, Aitza Cruz notched eight digs and Ayzaline Garay added seven for Mercy (2-0).
 
Goldey-Beacom on Saturday hosts a tri-match at Jones Center, facing Virginia Union at noon and Pace at 4:00 pm.  Virginia Union will play Pace at 2:00 pm.
