Softball Gains a Split at Staten Island

Goldey-Beacom stepped out of conference play, gaining a split with a win in game one 10-6 before falling in game two 5-1 at Staten Island in Staten Island, NY.

Back-to-back hits from junior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) and sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) placed runners on base for two early runs.

Staten Island tied up the score with an RBI-double from Aileen Balderas and an RBI-single from Amelia Funston.

Staten Island took the lead in the second inning, 5-2, of a double from Balderas and a hit-by-pitch.

After runs from each team to make the score 6-3, the Lightning rallied for seven runs in the fifth innings off singles from freshman Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN), junior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ), senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE), Davis, and a grounded-out sacrifice play from Lowry to secure the 10-6 triumph.

Davis went 4-for-5 with one RBI, and Lowry, Scott and Setting all had two hits and two RBI. Junior Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) notched the win, striking out three over five innings pitched.

Balderas had two hits and three RBI and Rianne Mayer had two hits.

Game two saw Staten Island jump to a 3-0 lead off a grounded-out RBI and hits from Anissa Acosta and Elizabeth Moore.

The Lightning tallied a run in the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly from junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) to drive home Davis.

But a two-RBI single from Balderas secured the game for Staten Island at 5-1.

Makin closed with one hit and one RBI, and Davis, Lowry, Scott, and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) each had one hit for GBC (24-18, 3-9 CACC).

Mariah Carcano went 3-for-3, and Acosta had two hits with one RBI for Staten Island (11-23, 3-7 ECC).
