Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Plays Solidly in Two Tough Games at Wilmington

Freshman Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) reached a huge milestone and Goldey-Beacom once again displayed solid competitiveness in dropping two close Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games, 5-3 and 3-2, at Wilmington (DE) in New Castle, DE.

Wilmington in game one jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Sara Miller cracked a two-out, two-run homer.  Miller again was on the spot with two outs, this time in the third when her two-run double to left field made it 4-0.

The Lightning responded with three runs in the third, starting with a single from freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD), a hit by pitch to senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) and a walk to sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ).  The squad then provided its own two-out prowess, getting an RBI single from junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) and a two-run single by senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD).

But Miller could not be stopped, lifting a sacrifice fly in the last of the fifth for a 5-3 margin.  Goldey-Beacom got a baserunner in each of the last two frames, but each were erased on the basepaths to end the rallies.

Lexi Moore went 3-for-3 with Miller and Taylor Gillis getting two hits apiece for the Wildcats.  Brooke Koehler struck out eight over six innings, yielding just one run and three hits.

Wilmington in game two opened the scoring in the last of the third inning.  Gillis had a leadoff single, scored when Lexi Moore's single turned into a throwing error and Tristyn Stewart followed with an RBI groundout.

The Lightning responded with two runs of their own in the fourth.  Jordan led off with an infield single and Simpson followed with a two-run homer to left for her third long ball of the campaign.

But the Wildcats (23-9, 13-1 CACC) pushed a run across in the last of the fourth.  Emma Zimmerman was hit by a pitch, pinch-runner Isabella Eleazar was sacrificed one base each by Bri Coyle and Cassidy Zelano before she scored on Gillis' infield single.

GBC (23-17, 3-9) had an opportunity in the seventh with a runner on and none out.  However, Gillis made a sensational diving catch in center field off the bat of freshman Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ) and made the throw to double up the runner at first.

A major story in game two continues to be the play of Doctor, who became the third pitcher in school history to reach 100 strikeouts in a season and the 15th to do so for her career.  She now stands at 101 and the single-season team mark is 117, set in 2000 by Patty Del Real.

Jordan closed with two hits.

Gillis and Moore had two hits apiece with Renamarie Rocha tossing four relief innings for the win.

Goldey-Beacom has a quick turnaround before Friday's non-league doubleheader at Staten Island.  First pitch is at 1:00 pm.
