Softball Punches Ticket to CACC Tournament with Doubleheader Sweep at Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom took care of business early in its doubleheader sweep, 10-1 and 6-1, at Dominican (NY) and earned its spot into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom (32-22, 11-13 CACC) is the No. 8 seed for the tournament and will visit top-seeded Wilmington in the first round.  The games are scheduled for Saturday at times to be determined, but please consult our social media accounts (@GBCLightning) and website (GBCAthletics.com) for all weather-relates updates.

The first round is a "best-of-two" series in which the higher seed needs just one victory and the lower seed has to win twice.  The four teams that survive this round compete in the double-elimination portion next week in Lakewood, NJ with the champion advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom in the opener set the early tone, needing just one victory on the day to seal its fate for the conference tournament.  Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) lined an RBI single in the first, fellow senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) and sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) added run-scoring singles in the second before junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) had a two-run single later in the frame for a 5-0 lead.

The Chargers (11-35, 6-18) got a run in the last of the second before the Lightning plated two more in the fourth for a 7-1 lead.  Makin lifted a sacrifice fly and Jordan added an RBI single.

GBC then put away things with three runs in the fifth to win via the run rule.  Junior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) drove one home on a fielder's choice and Makin ended her career-best five-RBI game with a two-run triple.

Rising Sun, MD freshman Alesia Doctor (11-11) again was on point, striking out five over five innings and yielding just one run to go with five hits.  Her 122 strikeouts this season is a new school record, breaking the mark held by Patty Del Real (2000), and her career total now puts her 12th.

Makin, Lowry, Jordan, Setting and freshman Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) all had two hits for the Lightning.

Chloe McIntosh recorded two hits for the Chargers.

The teams in game two were level, 1-1, when the Lightning plated three runs in the top of the third.  Lowry had a two-run single that put GBC ahead for good and Makin continued her impressive day with an RBI groundout.

Jordan sacrificed home Lowry in the fifth and freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) added an RBI single in the seventh for the final.

Clayton, DE sophomore Morgan McLane (8-8) enjoyed another solid outing, striking out five and allowing just one run and eight hits over seven innings.  Her 168 career strikeouts now has her in sole possession of fourth place in team history and she remains seventh in victories, now with 18.

McIntosh and Elizabeth Tolkan had two hits apiece for Dominican.
