Softball Dealt 6-0 Loss at Wilmington in the CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom saw its outstanding season full of improvement and hope for the future end with a 6-0 loss at Wilmington (DE) in the first round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament in New Castle, DE.

The Lightning (32-23, 11-13 CACC) this season put forth a campaign in which they recorded the most victories since getting a school-record 37 during the 1998 season, notched the fourth 30-win season in program annals, played tough in all three games against perennial stalwart Wilmington and got a huge win March 31 against a strong Caldwell squad.

GBC on March 11 saw its 6-2 trip to South Carolina end with an invitation to participate in the North Myrtle Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade.  The Mayor's office was sent to watch the tournament and pick one team from the countless participating to join the festivities.

The eight win improvement from last season also saw Goldey-Beacom make the CACC Tournament in a non-COVID-abridged format for the first time since 2017.  The squad also had a double-digit league victory total in consecutive years for the first time since 2005-06.

The eighth-seeded Lightning today in the second inning implemented great defense, but the No. 1 seed Wildcats (34-12) scratched out two runs.  Two singles and two close calls at first base has two runners on with two outs before Tristyn Stewart lined a single just inside the third-base bag to open the scoring.

It stayed that way into the third, when Sara Miller created her own two-out offense with a long home run to right-center field for a 3-0 contest.

Wilmington got insurance runs in the sixth with Danielle Hess scoring on a wild pitch and Taylor Gillis lining a two-run double.

Kylee Gunkel simply was outstanding in the circle, retiring the first 12 batters before senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) reached her for a leadoff single in the fifth.  Gunkel faced just one batter above the minimum before Delani Sheehan struck out all six batters she faced for the save.

Among the highlights for Goldey-Beacom this season included freshman Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) and sophomore Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) exceling in the pitcher's circle.  The two combined for 217 strikeouts over 253 innings, with Doctor getting a school-record 123 strikeouts, to go with seven saves and 19 wins.  The two also had a combined .261 batting average against them and tossed four shutouts.

Junior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) had a team-best 58 hits and 10 doubles with senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) pacing the squad by recording a .364 batting average.
