Softball Gains Doubleheader Split vs. Post

Goldey-Beacom ended its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Post with a 3-0 victory after opening with a 4-1 loss at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Game two was one the Lightning needed to make a statement and that happened in the second inning with two runs for a 2-0 lead.  Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) lined a one-out single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single from fellow freshman Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ).  The latter stole second, took third on a bunt single from senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) and crossed home on an error.

The margin grew to 3-0 in the third.  Sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) had a leadoff single, stole second and scored when pinch-hitter junior Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) lined a single to left.

That was enough for Rising Sun, MD freshman Alesia Doctor (10-11), who tossed her second shutout of the season by striking out six and yielding just three hits over seven innings.  Her 10th victory of the season is tied for ninth in GBC history, her 10 overall wins is 19th in team annals, her 117 strikeouts matches the single-season mark held by Patty Del Real (2000) and that career total has her 13th.

This all helped GBC (30-22, 9-13 CACC) reach 30 victories for the fourth time in program history.

Game one starters Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) and Jenny Riquelme were locked in an outstanding pitchers duel with both giving very little in a contest both needed to help in their chances of making the CACC Tournament.

Post drew first blood by scratching out a run in the top of the second.  Juliana Rigano and Courtney Brobst both walked, advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch and scored on Julianna Cicala's groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Riquelme was cruising along by retiring the first 10 batters in taking a perfect game into the fourth inning.  GBC made some noise later in the frame with Lowry and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) each getting a single, but a deep fly to center from freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) was caught to end the frame.

Post widened the gap in the top of the sixth, when Rigano crushed one to left field for a two-run homer for a 3-0 Eagles cushion.

GBC got one back in the last of the frame for a 3-1 deficit.  Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an RBI single from fellow junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ).

Post (14-32, 6-14) added one in the seventh on Allyson Wallauer's sacrifice fly for the final.

McLane (7-8) again was solid, striking out six over six innings.  She now is tied with Taylor Beres (2018-21) for fourth in team history with 163 career strikeouts and is at 202 1/3 innings pitched, becoming the 16th in program history to reach at least 200 innings.

Riquelme (7-13) struck out four over seven innings, yielding just one run and three hits.  Cicala and Carli Perruso notched two hits apiece.

Goldey-Beacom ends its regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader at Dominican (NY).  Please note the first pitch now is at noon.
