Women’s Basketball Gets Six on the CACC Academic Honor Roll

4/20/2023 12:00:00 AM

Another strong showing in the classroom for Goldey-Beacom's women's basketball team saw six make the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Seniors Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) and Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, NJ) each made the list a fourth time, junior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) received her third appearance, sophomore Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) was honored for a second time with junior Mickey Williams (Wamboin, Australia) and sophomore Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) getting their first nod.

Weikert had another solid campaign guiding the offense, providing strong play on defense and giving the squad leadership skills that will be missed.  She ended the campaign fourth in the league with 95 assists (ninth best in program history), ninth with 50 steals and 12th with a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Weikert graduates 10th in GBC history with 190 assists and 10th with 127 steals.

Gardner gave the team solid low-post play and was a key contributor in averaging 6.5 points per contest.  Stevens played a massive defensive role in the paint, blocking 42 shots that were good for third in the league (tied for ninth in team annals) and her 82 career blocks already are sixth in program history.

McCarron saw extended playing time off the bench at guard, which included her scoring 10 points December 17 against Staten Island, and she looks to return as a key contributor.  Williams showed great defensive prowess at guard and that sorely was missed when her season ended due to injury after nine contests.  Abraham continued to be a factor off the bench in the post, as witnessed by her scoring 11 points November 12 against the District of Columbia.

Goldey-Beacom's academic success also carried to the region level with the maximum four being tabbed College Sports Communicators Academic All-District.  This included Weikert, Gardner, Stevens and McCarron.

The program, which last season received "Special Mention" for academic excellence by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, has seen a combined 25 players picked to the CACC Academic Honor Roll over the last four years.

"In our program, we ask our players to do the following: be a great teammate and put forth their best effort every day."  Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator/Women's Basketball Coach Bethann Burke said.  "Their academic success is an example of their commitment to doing their best, regardless of the task, and being as consistent as they can in all areas of their life.  We are very proud of their academic achievements and we know they will continue to have success in the future."
