Softball Takes Two at Alliance

Goldey-Beacom continued to assert itself in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a doubleheader sweep, 8-1 and 3-2, against Alliance in Staten Island, NY.

Goldey-Beacom (28-18, 7-9 CACC) was in a 1-0 hole before it rattled off seven runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Freshman Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, PA) stroked the go-ahead two-run double, sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) lined a two-run single, junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) got an RBI on a booted grounder and freshman Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) added a two-run single.

Clayton, DE sophomore Morgan McLane (6-6) again pitched great, striking our four over six innings in allowing just one run and five hits.  She now is tied for sixth in team history with 153 strikeouts and tied for seventh with 16 wins.

Scott had two hits in addition to her two RBI.

Lynette Niebla went 3-for-3, but gave up seven runs and five hits over 4 1/3 innings for Alliance.

The Lightning in game two cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first, when senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) lifted a sacrifice fly.  That margin grew to 2-0 in the fourth when a grounder from senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) turned into a fielder's choice, plating Scott.

Lowry in the fifth inning once again worked her magic, connecting on a triple that along with an error brought her home and gave her squad a 3-0 margin.

Alliance (4-32, 2-16) climbed within 3-2 in the last of the frame on Niebla's sacrifice fly and Janelle Adams' RBI single.  But GBC got out of a major jam in the last of the sixth, when junior reliever Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) got Sarah Nunez on a lineout double play to end the inning.

Rising Sun, MD freshman Alesia Doctor (9-9) pitched strong in the circle, striking out four over four scoreless innings and allowing just four hits.  Her 109 strikeouts this season now are the 13th-best single-season mark in program history.

Lowry and junior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ) had two hits apiece and Safin tossed the last three innings for her second career save.

Jayna Celano went 3-for-3 and Brittany Tomala added two hits for Alliance.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday stays on the road to visit Bloomfield for a noon doubleheader.
