Softball Rolls to Two Victories

Goldey-Beacom continued its trip in Myrtle Beach, SC with a 14-4 triumph over Fairmont State that was followed with a 9-3 win against Chowan.

Goldey-Beacom in the third inning turned its game against a competitive Fairmont State squad into a rout, plating 12 runs to open a 14-1 lead.

The scoring in the inning began when freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) lined an RBI single before sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) dropped a run-scoring squeeze bunt for a 4-1 margin.  Senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) and freshman Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, PA) each added an RBI double before errors allowed two more to cross home for an 8-1 lead.

Freshman Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) ripped a two-run single, Lowry notched a fielder's choice RBI, an error off Jordan's single led to another run and junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) lined a two-run single for the 13-run lead.

Simpson opened the scoring with a first-inning sacrifice fly and senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) added an RBI double in the second for a 2-1 margin.

Abbie Keilholz launched a solo homer in the second and Emily Riggs added a two-run shot in the fifth for Fairmont State, which notched a 12-run inning earlier in the day against Chowan.

Junior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) went 3-for-3 with Scott also getting three hits for the Lightning, who closed with 14.

Sophomore Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) struck out six over five innings for her 13th career win, putting her in a tie for 10th place in school history.  Her 110 career strikeouts now have her 13th in team annals.

Goldey-Beacom (13-5) in its game with Chowan took the lead in the top of the second inning.  Simpson drew a leadoff, got to second on Makin's two-out single and scored on a single from junior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ).

Monzo and Makin advanced 60 feet on a passed ball before Setting's single up the middle for a 2-0 lead.  Chowan got one back in the last of the third on Caston Garland's leadoff homer, but GBC freshman starter Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) worked her way out of a jam after two runners were on with one out.

The lead was 2-1 enter the fifth before GBC exploded for five runs.  Makin drew a bases-loaded walk, Setting crushed a three-run triple and freshman Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) followed with an RBI single for a 7-1 margin.

Davis added an RBI single in the seventh and Setting scored on an error to make it 9-1.

Doctor again pitched great, striking out 10 to mark the third time a GBC hurler has accomplished that this season.  She gave up just one run and four hits over six innings.

Setting ended with two hits and four RBI, Makin had two hits and Scott extended her hitting streak to 10 games.  Scott has a hit in 13 of her 15 contests this year.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday faces Malone in a doubleheader, beginning at 9:00 am in Little River, SC.
