Softball Gets It Done Every Which Way in Sweep of Malone

Goldey-Beacom combined hitting, pitching and speed in running its winning streak to four with a doubleheader sweep of Malone, 6-5 and 11-6, in Little River, SC.

The Lightning in the top of the first inning in game one struck first when freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) lined an RBI triple.  The Pioneers quick leveled things in the last of the frame on a solo home run from Karlie Duvall.

GBC got back at in the second when Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) ripped an RBI triple and fellow freshman Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) added a run-scoring groundout for a 3-1 margin.  Malone went back to the long ball for its next two runs with Reagan Smith crushing a solo shot in the second and Halyn Cawthorne adding her own homer in the third for a 3-3 tie.

Junior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) gave Goldey-Beacom the lead back in the fourth with a two-run double for a 5-3 margin.  But Malone answered again, getting an RBI triple from Amber Miller in the fourth and a run-scoring single from Hannah Offenberger in the fifth for a 5-5 game.

The Lightning (15-5) finally took the lead for good in the sixth when Friel lined a leadoff triple and scored on Johnson's second RBI groundout of the contest.

Sophomore Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) then went into the circle in the last of the frame and finished things, tossing two perfect innings for her first career save.

Bethlehem, PA sophomore Abby Husser (4-0) also played a big part, striking out 10 over five innings to give her a victory in all four starts.  Friel and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) had three hits apiece with Davis and senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) adding two each.

Amber Miller had two hits and Jensen Miller (3-2) allowed six runs – five earned – and 13 hits over seven innings for Malone (5-7).

Game two saw the Lightning put up five runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.  Simpson and sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) each had an RBI double, Setting and Simpson each stole home and freshman Marah Schotz (Lockport, NY) added a run-scoring single.

Junior Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) made it 8-0 GBC in the fourth with a two-run single.

The Pioneers made things interesting in the fifth with five runs for a 9-6 game.  Amber Miller had the key hit with a two-run single, Cawthorne lined an RBI single with Madi Pukansky and Smith each getting bases-loaded walks.

But the Lightning tacked on two more in the sixth with freshman Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) and sophomore Kelly Forrest (Wilmington, DE) each getting a sacrifice fly for the final.

GBC ran wild with a season-high 11 stolen bases, including four from Setting and three from Davis.  The Lightning are 67-of-72 on the young season in stolen-base attempts.

Pitching again was a huge story with Rising Sun, MD freshman Alesia Doctor (3-4) notching 10 strikeouts over six scoreless innings, marking the sixth time a GBC pitcher this season has accomplished this.  It comes one day after she got 10 strikeouts against Chowan.

Setting and Davis notched three hits apiece.

Taylor Kern rapped three hits for Malone.

Goldey-Beacom on Friday concludes its stay with two games, facing Rio Grande at 9:00 am and Rochester (MI) at 11:00 am.
