Softball Gains a Split at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

Goldey-Beacom powered to a convincing 9-1 victory over Penn State Schuylkill in game one before falling just short in a 2-1 loss against Madonna at the Park & Sports Complex in Little River, SC.

Despite an early run by Schuylkill, the Lightning were not phased. Hits from freshmen Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ), Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN), Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD), Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) moved baserunners to drive in six first inning runs.

The Lightning continued their impressive play, closing the second inning with a double play involving Johnson and Scott before back-to-back doubles from Simpson and junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) scored two more runs.

Junior Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) pinch-hit in the sixth and connected for a single to center field to drive in freshman Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) for a final score of 9-1 in favor of the Lightning.

Scott closed the game 3-for-3 with Simpson and Johnson recorded two hits and one RBI apiece. Sophomore Abby Husser (Bethlehem, PA) recorded the win, pitching four innings.

Game two showed a tougher contest for the Lightning. With just three hits between the two teams, the game stood scoreless going into the fifth inning.

Madonna opened with a single by Emma Mossing, leading to a score following a sacrifice bunt by Emily Theisen. With Theisen on third and two outs, and huge double play involving Johnson and freshman Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, PA) held the Crusaders to a single run, getting Theisen out at home plate.

The Lightning strung together a series of hits to tally a run in the fifth to tie up the score. A single from Jordan and a double by Jagielski gave Johnson two runners in scoring positions. Doing her part, Johnson connected for a single down the left-field line to drive in pinch-runner Insinga.

The Crusaders notched their winning run in the seventh off a single from Kiana Morgan.

Johnson tallied two hits and an RBI, with Jordan and Jagielski connecting for one hit each. Rising Sun, MD native Alesia Doctor (1-4) finished with five strikeouts in seven innings pitched for GBC (11-5).

Goldey-Beacom continues its trip south on Tuesday with a 1:00 pm matchup against Fairmont State before facing Chowan at 3:00 pm in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
