Softball Sees a Split on Day One of Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

Goldey-Beacom saw impressive play despite a split in its South Carolina openers with a 4-1 loss against Pikeville and 7-1 win over Trinity International at the Park & Sports Complex in Little River, SC.

Despite the loss, Clayton, DE native Morgan McLane (2-1) was a force from the mound. She recorded 10 strikeouts in six innings and now has 104 career, making her the 14th player in team history to reach the 100-strikeouts milestone.

Pikeville was the first to tally on the scoreboard in the first inning. Singles from Zoe Ingram, Clara Blair and Haleigh Jones, and a double from Kelsie Hardester drove in three runs for the Bears.

The Lightning struck in the third inning, beginning with a single from McLane. Pinch running for McLane, freshman Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball by the Bears to get the Lightning on the scoreboard. Despite singles by senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) and freshman Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN), the Lightning were kept to the single run.

The Bears notched a final run in the third off another single by Jones to bring in Lillie Kluesner.

Davis, Scott, McLane, sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) and senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE) each recorded one hit each.

Game two proved to be a different story, with the Lightning striking early against Trinity International. Reaching base via a single, Scott scored following two errors by the Trojans.

The second inning saw a score by junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ), who reached home plate before a double play. Senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) made up for it in the fourth, with a single to drive in Johnson for a 3-0 Lightning lead.

Two more runs came in the sixth from Lowry and freshman Marah Schotz (Lockport, NY). Lowry singled to right field before Jordan continued her hitting streak with a single to center field.

Final Lightning runs came in the seventh inning from a sacrifice fly from Lowry to drive in Setting and Scott, who scored on a throwing error by the Trojans. The Trojans tallied one run in the seventh for a final score of 7-1.

Jordan showed impressive play offensively and defensively, with three hits and one RBI to go with 10 strikeouts in six innings pitched. Scott closed with two hits for GBC (10-4).

Heather Anderson, Alisyn Fullingim and Casey Cousino recorded one hit each for the Trojans (0-8).

Goldey-Beacom continue its South Carolina trip facing Penn State Schuylkill at 3:00 pm and Madonna at 5:00 pm in Little River, SC.
