Softball Fall in Both Games at Mercy



Goldey-Beacom faced a tough contest against Mercy, and was consequently handed two losses, 5-4 and 14-4, in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
 
The Lightning took an early lead in game one following a single-RBI home runs from sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD), and an RBI-single from Jordan to give put the Lightning ahead 3-0.
 
But Mercy punched back in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, with a single from Cayla Crawford and three-RBI home run from Sydney Johnston.
 
With senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) connecting for a double, Lowry fired a double to left center to drive in Davis and tie up the game at 4-4.
 
Despite the spark, Mercy connected for back-to-back hits to drive in the winning run and take the game 5-4.
 
Lowry and Jordan ended with two hits and two RBI each. Freshman Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD), pitching six innings, struck out seven and allowed just five hits.
 
Game two saw the Lightning come out swinging, opening with hits from Davis, Lowry, and an RBI-single from junior Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) to begin the scoring.
 
Mercy were quick to tally runs, with four runs off five hits.
 
A single from junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) drove in freshman Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA), who had reached via a single, to have the Lightning trailing 4-2.
 
The third inning saw Mercy go on a rally, totaling seven runs off a home run, three singles, and a Lightning error.
 
A grounded out RBI from Lowry gave the Lightning a third run before Mercy tallied their final three runs in the fourth.
 
Despite a final run by freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) off a throwing error by Mercy, the game finished at 14-4 via the run rule.
 
Lowry finished with two hits and one RBI, with Davis getting two hits. Safin was dealt her second loss of the season, pitching two innings for GBC (21-9).
 
Nicole Smart had three hits and two RBI, and five players had two hits for Mercy (5-17).
 
Goldey-Beacom travel to Philadelphia, PA on Wednesday to face Jefferson in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.
