Track & Field Impresses at WCU Invitational; Women Secure Third Place & Men Close Fourth

Goldey-Beacom Men's and Women's Track & Field opened up their outdoor season with impressive showings at the WCU Invitational in West Chester, PA, with the women's finishing in third place and the men in fourth.
 
Fielding events for the men saw five top three performances. In the high jump, freshman Jayvon Laguerre (Milford, DE) placed third with 1.75m. Freshman Sebastien LaCroix (Hamilton, NJ) claimed third place in the shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw with 10.49m, 33.93m, and 30.80m respectively.
 
Sophomore Richard Mesa (Newark, DE) secured third place in the javelin throw with 28.40m. Mesa also threw 22.87m in the discus throw and 17.30m in the hammer throw to place eighth in both events.  Sophomore Manny Carranza (Milford, DE)n saw an eighth-place finish in the long jump with 5.65m.
 
In the track events, sophomore A'mair Buffaloe (Prospect Park, NJ) placed first with a time of 11.54. Buffaloe, also competing in the 200m, placed seventh with a time of 23.20. Also competing in the 200m, freshman Kedar Reid (Bear, DE) placed 12th with a time of 25.06, junior Khalil Proctor (Newark, DE) ran 25.31 to close 13th, and Laguerre finished in 14th place, running 25.89.
 
In the 400m, Reid led the Lightning placing eighth with a time of 57.63, with Proctor following just behind in ninth with a time of 1:01.14. Junior Kyle Scherer (Wilmington, DE) finished in 2:02.80 to see a fifth place finish and fellow junior Tymir Ash-Shaheed (Middletown, DE) placed 13th with a time of 2:20.14. In the 1500m, junior Zach Landvik-Larsen (Stroudsburg, PA) ran 4:22.09 to place fourth, Scherer placed sixth with a time of 4:25.13, and sophomore Colin Kay (Lewes, DE) closed in 4:31.81 to finish 11th.
 
Kay in the 5000m earned second place for the Lightning, with a time of 17:13.27 and junior Chris Crossen (Magnolia, DE) finished close with a time of 17:18.77 to place third. Sophomore Hezekiah Ali-Bentley (Dover, DE) topped the 400m hurdles, securing in first place with a time of 1:01.18. Crossen claimed second place in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:05.00, followed by sophomore Yusef Shakur (Townsend, DE) with a time of 11:10.00 to place third. The Lightning placed second in the 4x100m relay to close all events.
 
On the women's side, senior Asia Hollis (Rising Sun, MD) placed eighth with a time of 13.95 and sophomore Ellonah Lewis (North East, MD) placed 11th in a time of 14.60. The 800m saw sophomore Ny'jashia Smith (Newark, DE) run 2:45.56 and junior Camilla Flagg (Mardela Springs, MD) finish in 2:48.82 to finish in 13th place and 16th place respectively. Sophomore Madelynn Cool (Smyrna, DE) placed 13th in the 1500m with a time of 5:34.76, with sophomore Maddie Minnick (Wilmington, DE) placing just behind in 14th place with a time of 5:42.02.
 
Lightning runners Minnick and Cool placed in third and fourth place respectively in the 5000m with times of 21:17.31 and 21:55.86. Goldey-Beacom closed the track events in second place in the 4x100m relay with a time of 57.21.

In the fielding events, sophomore Savannah Boyce (Somerdale, NJ) notched third place in the high jump with a best junp of 1.37m. Junior Alexia Cornish (Milford, DE) placed sixth in the shot put with 10.13m, tenth in the discus with a throw of 24.55m, and 12th in the hammer throw with a throw of 22.95m. Junior Damia White (Bridgeton, NJ) placed ninth in the shot put with a best throw of 8.16m, eighth in the discus with 25.60m, and 14th in the hammer throw with 18.99m. Freshman Madison McGowan (Bristow, VA) finished eighth in the shot put with 9.17m, 11th in the discus with a best throw of 21.53m, and 15th in the hammer throw with 14.12m.

Sophomore Karla Chardon (Penns Grove, NJ) closed fielding events, securing first place in the javelin with 35.55m, topping second place by seven meters.
 
Goldey-Beacom return to action next Friday at the Millersville Metrics in Millersville, PA, with events starting at 7:00 pm.
