Softball Earns a Pair of Wins Against Queens (NY)

Goldey-Beacom secured yet another pair of wins at home, 3-2 and 6-1, over non-conference opponent Queens (NY) College at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning in game one, trailing 1-0 after the first inning, scored two runs in the second off a double from junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) and a single from senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE).

A sacrifice play from Jenny Murphy in the fifth gave the Knights another run to level the score at 2-2.

The Knights were close to a run in the eighth inning, but a throw from sophomore Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) to junior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ) got the runner out at home plate.

Freshman Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) started the spark for the Lightning, stealing third base after being placed on second via the international tiebreaker rule. Junior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) bunted to reach first base before taking second to give junior Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) two players in scoring position. Safin provided a game-winning sacrifice bunt for the win.

Makin and Setting each had two hits and one RBI apiece. Clayton, DE sophomore Morgan McLane (4-2) stuck out four over eight innings.

McLane now is 10th outright in school history with 14 wins and 11th with 128 strikeouts.

Dyana Budakowski had two hits for the Knights. Allyson Dilday pitched seven innings, striking out nine in the loss.

Game two again saw Queens (NY) take an early lead after a double by Ann Grimshaw, but that would be the sole run for the Knights.

Freshman Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) opened the scoring in the first inning with a triple down the right field line to drive home senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD).

A second Lightning run came in the third off a single from Jordan, before the lead was stretched to 4-1 with hits from Setting, freshman Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, DE) and Davis.

The Lightning closed the scoring with a final two runs in the sixth, with Monzo and Setting each connected for RBI-singles to score Lowry and sophomore Bri Snover (Claymont, DE).

Setting closed 3-for-3 with one RBI and Davis added two hits. Freshman Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) earned her sixth win of the season, striking out six over seven innings and allowing only four hits for GBC (21-7).

This marks the first time the Lightning have recorded 20-win seasons in back-to-back campaigns since doing so in 12 straight years from 1991-2002.

Grimshaw had two hits and one RBI for Queens (1-13).

Goldey-Beacom travel to Dobbs Ferry, NY on Sunday for a noon doubleheader against Mercy.
