Softball Gains Opening-Day Split vs. Millersville

Goldey-Beacom rallied for a thrilling 5-4 victory in game one and almost posted a rally in the nightcap, dropping a 2-1 decision to Millersville at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Down 4-2 entering the last of the sixth inning in game one, Goldey-Beacom (1-1) got one back.  Freshman Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) lined a two-out double to center and scored when senior Carly Setting (Newark, DE), named second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference last year, brought her home with a scorching double to center.

The last of the seventh began when Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) reached on a leadoff single and took third when a sacrifice bunt from fellow junior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ) was muffed.  Pinch-runner Davi Jimenez (Vineland, NJ) stole second and fellow sophomore Abby Husser (Bethlehem, PA) dropped a perfect bunt single, scoring Davis for a 4-4 tie.

Junior pinch-runner Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) stole second and freshman Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ) drew a two-out walk to load the bases.  Sophomore Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) followed by hitting a grounder that was booted by the third baseman, allowing Jimenez to cross home with the winning run.

Setting picked up right where she left off, rapping three hits that included two doubles.  She had 10 doubles a season ago and entered this season 16th in team history with a .343 career batting average.

Also showing last season's form was McLane, who struck out four over seven innings.  Her 11th career victory already has her tied for 14th in program history and her strikeout total stands at 78.

Freshman Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) also had two hits as part of the Lightning's 10.

Gabi Turner homered as part of her two hits with Lacey O'Donnell and Sam Fried also notching two hits for the Marauders (1-1).

Millersville in game two scored both of its runs in the top of the first.  O'Donnell drew a leadoff walked, Aleese Angelo had an infield single and both scored when Fried had the rare bunt double that found its way to the outfield.

The Lightning got one back in the second.  Sophomore Kelly Forrest (Wilmington, DE) had a leadoff single, freshman pinch-runner Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ) stole second and third before scoring on Scott's sacrifice bunt.

With darkness looming, GBC looked to rally in the fifth.  The squad loaded the bases with Setting's single, followed by a hit by pitch and a two-out walk.  But it could not get that last run across before it became an official game and sunlight expired.

Setting amassed two more hits and freshman Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) struck out five over five innings.

Alex Schaefer allowed just one run and four hits over five innings with four strikeouts for Millersville.

Goldey-Beacom is home again next Tuesday against Lincoln (PA) for a 1:30 pm doubleheader.
