Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Dealt Painful 64-63 Loss by Chestnut Hill

Junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) and freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) once again were on top form for Goldey-Beacom, but their squad were unable to hold a lead and was dealt a heartbreaking 64-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

A 15-3 scoring run in the final six minutes of the first half gave the Lightning a 35-34 lead and all of the momentum to begin the second half. Thomas netted nine points on 3-of-3 three-pointers and Marsh notched five points.

After a two and a half minute scoring drought by both team, Marsh opened it back up with a strong move to net a layup with seven minutes remaining and bring the Lightning trailing 55-50.

Despite back-to-back scores for the Chestnut Hill, the Lightning were not out, Marsh continued his strength down low to finish another layup. The Lightning's strong defense forced a three-pointer by the Griffins, which was rebounded and pushed for a fastbreak layup by sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) to bring the Lightning behind 59-54 with five minutes to go.

A foul by Marsh following a Griffin's timeout sent Conor Regan to the free throw line, who buried both. Marsh, making up for his mistake, once again found himself in the paint and adding another two points to bring the score to 61-56 with 4:33 left.

A costly turnover by Nigel Haughton led to another Lightning offense. Junior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) was unsuccessful with a three-point attempt, but Judge was there for the offensive rebound and putback to lift the trailing by three points at 61-58 with 3:34 remaining.

With 3:18 to go, the Griffins were unable to connect on a 3-point attempt, and this proved advantageous to the Lightning. Thomas gathered the rebound before taking it down the court and burying the three-pointer to tie up the game with 2:59 to remaining at 61-61.

However, the Griffins pushed back. Attempting to redeem himself, James Rider let another three-pointer fly, and this time it found the net. The Griffins led 64-61 with 2:42 left.

Judge found himself with a layup opportunity with 2:30 to go, but was met by Charles Noah who blocked the shot. The ball found the hands of Collins, who was fouled and sent to the charity stripe for a 1-an-1 opportunity but Collins could not connect on the first, and the Griffins rebounded the ball.

The Griffins, who still held the 64-61 lead, missed a jumper for add to their lead and Marsh gathered the rebound. The offense found an open shot for Thomas who, despite having been the go-to man for shooting, could not find the bottom of the net.

Collins was again on the offensive glass and grabbed the ball before having it stolen by Regan with 1:32 to go. But Collins hustled to steal it back with 1:08 to go and the Lightning called a timeout.

Marsh, who had been a force all game, looked for a scores and contact on his way up with 48 seconds to go, but the Griffins' solid defense saw the score go but no foul call. The Lightning trailed 64-63.

A final turnover by the Lightning with five seconds to go squandered any opportunity for another attempt at the winning basket.

Thomas, who has come into his own toward the tail end of the season, finished with 22 points, shooting 6-of-13 from three-point range. This sees his fourth game with 20 or more points in the last five games. Marsh continues to be a force inside, closing with 18 points and nine rebounds. Judge added 11 points for GBC (10-16, 7-8 CACC).

Regan led the Griffins (15-12, 9-7 CACC) with 16 points, Haughton notched 11 points and nine rebounds and Rider added 10.

Despite the loss, the Lightning forced 19 turnovers by the Griffins, and saw 23 points from this pressure.

Goldey-Beacom head to Philadelphia, PA on Wednesday for a matchup against Jefferson at 8:00 pm. This follows the women's contest against the same school, beginning at 6:00 pm.
