Men's Basketball Fall Short in 80-73 Loss at Kutztown

Goldey-Beacom fell just short in a tough 80-73 non-conference loss against Kutztown in Kutztown, PA.

Leading 38-32 at the half, the Lightning continued their offensive consistency with sophomore Trey Lewis (Herndon, VA) canning a 3-pointer at the 15:04 mark to increase the lead to 48-41.

Following scores being traded either way, junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) netted a jumper to give the Lightning a 63-51 with 10:04 to go. Thomas and Kyle Whippen for the Golden Bears scored on back-to-back possessions each to keep the lead in favor of the Lightning with 7:50 remaining.

However, two free throws and a steal to a layup by Jalen Bryant gave the Golden Bears the late spark with 6:56 left. Back-to-back scores by Whippen and another layup by Bryant brought the Golden Bears to trailing by five at 69-64 with 4:23 to go.

Freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) kept the Lightning ahead by seven at 71-64 with 3:43 left, but Wesley Butler answered back, canning a three-pointer just 20 seconds later.

Fellow freshman Omari Banks (Middletown, DE) gave the Lightning another six point advantage with 2:52 remaining, but an unfortunate foul sent Butler to the free-throw line and he was able to knock down both. Butler netted yet another three-pointer with 1:36 remaining to get the Golden Bears to within one at 73-72.

A further three-pointer by Kyree Generett with 1:06 to go gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the second half at 75-73.

Banks, attempting to give the Lightning the lead with 32 seconds left, was unable to connect on a three-point attempt, forcing the Lightning to foul with 23 seconds remaining. The Golden Bears went five-for-five from the charity stripe in the final 20 seconds to secure the win.

Thomas closed with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting and six assists, making this his third game scoring 20 or more points in the last four.

Marsh notched his 13th double-double notching 17 points and 11 rebounds with Lewis adding a season-best 14 points for GBC (10-15, 7-7 CACC).

Generett led with 24 points, Bryant finished with 19 and Whippen notched 15 on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting for Kutztown (7-17, 6-12 PSAC).

Goldey-Beacom is home next Saturday to face Chestnut Hill at 3:00 pm, following the women's game against the same school at 1:00 pm.
