Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls Just Short, 81-78, at Saint Michael’s

Goldey-Beacom rallied from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to take the lead, only to be dealt an 81-78 loss at Saint Michael's in Colchester, VT.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half again continued to show promising signs for the future, playing five newcomers and a starting lineup that included two sophomores along with one freshman.  Freshman Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA), twice named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week, poured in 10 points over the first 20 minutes with sophomore Gaia Zimbardo (Parma, Italy) adding six points.

The Purple Knights shot 48 percent (15-of-31) from the floor, including 56 percent (9-of-16) in the opening quarter for a 40-30 halftime lead.  Amber Furch netted 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting with three 3-pointers.

Goldey-Beacom continued to persevere into the third quarter, ending it with an 11-4 run to turn a 59-46 deficit into a 63-57 contest.  Sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) poured in seven points during that span, ending the period with 12 and helping GBC shoot 73 percent (11-of-15) from the field.

The Lightning were not done, beginning the fourth with a 15-4 spurt for a 72-67 lead with 6:20 remaining.  Yoder netted seven points in that span, ending it with a 3-pointer.

Saint Michael's then found its scoring touch, using a 13-4 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes to gain an 80-76 lead with 1:38 left.  Bella Franchi made a layup with 3:03 to go for a 78-76 cushion before Ruby Santos ended the spurt with her own layup.

Ciszkowski's layup with 82 seconds left got GBC within 80-78 and Paige Slaven's missed layup gave the visitors a change to tie.  But junior Jenissa Varela (Ledyard, CT) had her shot down low blocked by Slaven and the latter corralled the rebound.

Slaven went to the line with 26 seconds remaining, but missed two big free throws and Yoder got the rebound.  GBC worked for a shot that Varela took from three-point range, but misfired.  Yoder got the rebound, but her layup would not go and Kelly Laggis got the rebound for the Purple Knights (3-4).

Amber Furch hit a free throw with 0.2 seconds left for the final.

Yoder again played solidly, scoring a season-best 26 points and matching her personal high with nine rebounds.  Ciszkowski had 16 points and eight rebounds with Varela adding 11 and five for the Lightning (1-8), who shot 49 percent (30-of-61) from the floor.

Slaven netted 18 points, Amber Furch scored 17 with Brianna Furch adding 10 and six assists for Saint Michael's, who shot 47 percent (31-of-66) from the floor and canned 12 three-pointers.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday closes its New England trip with a 1:00 pm contest versus American International.
