Women's Basketball Dealt 82-71 Loss at Bowie State

Goldey-Beacom saw five reach double figures in a non-conference loss, 82-71, against Bowie State in Bowie, MD.

The Lightning jumped to a 42-31 first half lead, proving themselves to be the more unselfish team with 12 assists to the Bulldogs' five. Sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) drained 11 points with fellow sophomore Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) and freshman Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA) each adding eight in the half to aid the lead.

The second half provided some very different action as Bowie State came out of the locker room on a mission. The Bulldogs found themselves within 45-39 after an 8-3 run created some energy. The Lightning responded with their own 8-2 scoring run before Bowie State closed out the third quarter with an 11-3 run, led by Anii Harris who had six in that time.

As the fourth quarter rolled around it was all to play for. With 7:50 remaining, junior Jenissa Varela (Ledyard, CT) and Yoder knocked down two free throws each to lift the Lightning to a 62-58 lead.

Varela and Yoder traded buckets with Bowie State to keep the Lightning's spark lit, but the Bulldogs began to edge away with 5:03 left as they began a 10-0 run to further their lead to 74-68 with 1:05 to go.

Senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) cut off the scoring run after finishing a layup, but the Lightning were forced into a tactical situation of fouling to hold the clock.

Despite three scores from the charity stripe from Varela, Bowie State secured an 82-71 win on a layup by Harris with 14 seconds to go.

Varela, named to last week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll, led with 16 points and four assists.  Yoder closed with 15 points, Ciszkowski notched 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, Lemon had 11 points and four assists with Stevens adding 10 points and 13 rebounds for GBC (1-7).

Harris topped all scorers with 27 points, Katerra Myers netted 14 and Mia Smith added 10 for Bowie State (5-2).

Goldey-Beacom travels to Colchester, VT on Saturday to take on Saint Michael's at noon.
