Women’s Basketball Handed 63-61 Loss at Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom looked to establish momentum in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference coming out of winter break, but succumbed to Georgian Court for a 63-61 loss in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening quarter eradicated an 11-1 deficit by going on a 13-2 run in the last 5 1/2 minutes, shooting 3-of-6 from the field and 5-for-7 from the foul line for a 14-13 lead.  Sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) scored five points in that span for the Lightning, who forced the Lions into shooting 1-of-7 during that time with four turnovers.

The Lightning's defense was on point in the second quarter, holding the Lions to just 23-percent shooting (3-of-13) and forcing four turnovers.  GBC held a 24-21 halftime lead with junior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) scoring six points and Ciszkowski adding five.

The third quarter featured Goldey-Beacom going on a 13-6 run in just over four minutes to open a 39-31 lead with 3:20 to go.  Ciszkowski again found her outstanding shooting touch, scoring six points to help GBC shoot 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field in the stanza.

The Lions got back into it with a 15-6 run in just under 5 1/2 minutes for a 46-45 lead with 7:50 left in regulation.  Imani Gillette was an almost unstoppable presence in the post, scoring 10 points in that time.

A 54-54 tie was broken when the Lions' Safiatu Kolliegbo stole an errant pass and coasted in for a layup with 2:39 to go.  After GBC could not convert on the other end, Jada Jacobs hit a massive driving layup with 1:59 remaining for a 58-54 margin and the first two-possession lead for the home side since the opening quarter.

The lead ballooned to 62-56 with 32 seconds left on Marta Guilera's layup.  GBC sophomore Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) then hit a huge 3-pointer with 28 seconds to go for a three-point game before Guilera went 1-for-2 from the line with 17 seconds remaining for a 63-59 contest.

After Yoder made two free throws with 11 seconds left for a 63-61 game, Lemon forced a jump ball that gave the Lightning (1-12, 0-2 CACC) one final possession.  However, Georgian Court denied all looks for the GBC both down low and on the perimeter before time expired.

Ciszkowski poured in 16 points to go with four 3-pointers, Yoder had nine rebounds for the third time this season to go with 14 points and freshman Genesis Garcia (Aguada, PR) added eight points.

Gillette was unbelievable with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with 10 points, Jacobs netted 12 points and Kolliegbo added 11 for Georgian Court (1-9, 1-1).

Goldey-Beacom is home next Wednesday against Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  Game time is at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 8:00 pm.
