Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Plays Paintball in 86-75 Victory Over American International; TJ Dekmar Records 100th Coaching Victory

Goldey-Beacom scored an eye-popping 58 points in the paint and shot over 50 percent from the floor for a fifth time this season in an 86-75 triumph over American International at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning more than had their way in the post by shooting 63 percent (30-for-48) from two-point range and 51 percent (33-of-65) overall from the floor.  GBC made the second half its own, shooting 72 percent (21-for-29) from two-point range in the second half and 61 percent (22-of-36) overall.

GBC netted 10 straight points in just under 100 seconds to turn a one-point deficit into a 49-40 lead with 16:11 left.  Senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) netted six points in that span.

The Yellow Jackets were not done yet, buzzing their way to a 14-8 run that closed things to a 65-62 contest with 7:15 remaining.  Kanye Wavezwa scored eight points and Carlos Hubb ended it with a layup.

However, this was the Lightning's day in getting coach TJ Dekmar his 100th victory.  GBC ended the suspense with a 15-7 run in just over four minutes to gain an 80-69 lead with 2:34 to go.  Senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ), honored before the game for being the 12th in program history to reach 1,000 career points, netted five in that spurt with sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) adding four.

Sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) was one of five for the Lightning and 10 in the contest in double figures, pouring in a season-best 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go with nine rebounds.  Thomas had 14 points and a personal-best 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, Derry and Bates netted 14 points apiece with freshman Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) adding 11 in helping GBC (6-5) get its fourth win in the last six outings.

Justice Ellison recorded 19 points and nine rebounds, Jacob Barnett netted 17 points, Wavezwa scored 13, Lovre Zaja put in 12 and Aguilbou Balde added 10 for AIC (4-7), which shot 45 percent (28-of-62) from the field but committed 18 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom is off until December 30, when it returns to play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference at Georgian Court.  Game time is at 2:00 pm, which follows the women's game between the same schools at noon.
