Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short, 58-49 at Millersville

Goldey-Beacom grabbed the lead in the final minutes and played outstanding defense throughout, but could not overcome a late scoring drought for a 58-49 loss at Millersville in Millersville, PA.

The Lightning in the opening quarter once again executed strong defense, holding the Marauders to just 37 percent shooting (7-of-19).  That continued into the second period, when Millersville went almost five minutes without a point and Goldey-Beacom kept things at worst a two-possession game.

But Millersville ended the period with an 8-2 run over the last 3 1/2 minutes to gain a 27-18 lead.  Makiah Shaw went on a tear in the half, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting to help her squad shoot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the floor in the second quarter and 42 percent (13-of-31) for the half.

Goldey-Beacom was in a 44-35 hole at three-quarter time before its offense and defense went to work.  The Lightning poured in the first 10 points in the fourth on 4-of-6 shooting and induced four turnovers to grab its first lead of the game, 45-44 with 4:23 remaining.  Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA), a reigning member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll and twice named the league's Rookie of the Week, netted six points in that time with senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) adding four.

The Marauders finally ended the drought with 3:46 left, with Brenna Ortwein going 1-for-2 from the line for a 45-45 tie.  Two free throws from sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) with 3:19 remaining game GBC its biggest lead, 47-45.

Millersville then asserted itself by scoring the next 10 points over two minutes, shooting 3-for-4 from the floor and making all three of its free throws for a 55-47 cushion with 36 seconds left.

Shaw began things with two free throws with 2:39 to go for a 47-47 tie and Millersville got the ball back off a turnover.  Shaw saw another opportunity to take control and came through, grabbing a rebound of her own miss and completing an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:19 left for a 50-47 contest.

Shaw's layup with 85 seconds to go made it 52-47 and Sophie Elstone buried a 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining for an eight-point contest that all but ended things.

Yoder scored 15 points, Ciszkowski had 10 and six rebounds, sophomore Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) poured in eight points and junior Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) added six for the Lightning (1-10).

Shaw simply was awesome with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting over 32 minutes.  Elstone added 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting for Millersville (3-5), which only shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom is home Monday for a matinee against Saint Thomas Aquinas.  Game time is at 1:00 pm.
