Women's Basketball Falls, 90-64, To Holy Family in CACC Opener



Goldey-Beacom opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play by falling, 90-64, against Holy Family at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning found themselves trailing 24-17 after the first quarter, and a 9-2 second quarter start for the Tigers extended their lead to 33-19.
 
After trading scores for the remainder of the half, the score sat at 48-33 after two periods. Seven Lightning players made the scoresheet in the first half, led by senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.
 
With 4:22 remaining in the third quarter, junior Jenissa Varela (Ledyard, CT) went on a 6-2 solo scoring run to bring the Lightning within 58-43. But a 14-5 run by the Tigers closed out the third 72-50, assisted by five points each from Lindsey Tretter and Kara Meredith.
 
Despite Varela opening the fourth quarter with eight points, Holy Family proved dominant over the Lightning by closing the game with a 13-4 run to secure a 90-64 win.
 
Varela closed with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-15 shooting, Stevens finished with nine and freshman Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA), who was named CACC Rookie of the Week two weeks running, notched nine and pulled down seven rebounds for GBC (1-6, 0-1 CACC).
 
Carly Bolivar had 17 points, including going 9-from-10 from the foul line, Skyler Searfoss recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds, Claire Dougherty had 13 and seven with Taylor Hinkle adding 12 and 10 for Holy Family (6-1, 1-0).
 
Goldey-Beacom travels to Bowie, MD on Tuesday as they face Bowie State at 5:00 pm In non-conference play.
