Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Rolls to 110-78 Triumph Over Kutztown

Goldey-Beacom saw five players score in double figures as it took control in the second half for a 110-78 triumph over Kutztown to open a three-game homestand at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

While the 49-39 GBC lead would not indicate, the first half was a wild affair that featured 11 lead changes and three ties.  The Lightning made sure their lead would hold through the end of the half, finishing with a 24-13 run in which senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) and freshman Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) scored six points apiece with junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) adding five.

Derry, picked Monday to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll, closed the half with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and four 3-pointers.  McQueen scored 12 points on a quartet of 3-pointers and Centeno contributed nine.

The Lightning put away things courtesy of a 14-0 run in unusual fashion.  Sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) scored the final 10 points that included five free throws off three technical fouls with 11:51 left, a layup 11 seconds later and a 3-pointer with 10:59 remaining for an 81-55 cushion.

When the smoke cleared, the Lightning (3-3) outscored the Golden Bears 61-39 in the second half by shooting 58 percent (21-of-36) from the floor and holding the visitors to 39 percent (15-of-39).

Derry closed with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting with eight rebounds, five 3-pointers, four assists and four steals.  He now stands at 987 career points and is on the verge of becoming the 12th in school history to reach 1,000.

Centeno, Bates and McQueen all poured in 16 points with sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) adding 12 and eight rebounds for the Lightning, who ended their seven-game slide against the Golden Bears.

Jalen Bryant scored 18 points, Kameron Roberts netted 12, Ryan Glassmacher poured in 11 with Yahmir Satterfield added 10 for Kutztown (1-4).

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday opens play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference at home against Holy Family as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  Game time is at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
