Men's Basketball Falls, 87-84, in Final Seconds Against No. 20 St. Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom put up a valiant effort in non-conference play against No. 20 St. Thomas Aquinas, falling on a buzzer beater, 87-84, in Sparkill, NY.

The Lightning jumped to a 51-34 first half lead, aided by a 19-6 scoring run in the final five minutes of the half. Senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) scored 10 of those points, draining 22 first half points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead all scorers.

The second half saw a large amount of action, beginning with a 20-8 Spartan run in the first minutes of the half, aided by four back-to-back three pointers to trail 59-54.

With 1:47 remaining, sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) finished a layup to give the Lightning an 81-77 lead but was followed closely by a three pointer by Kyle Pulliam to bring St. Thomas Aquinas to within one.

Both teams traded a couple of baskets before Derry went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give the Lightning a two-point lead with 18 seconds to go.

James Patterson made his way to the free throw line with 13 seconds left after a defensive lapse from the Lightning and connected on both foul shots to tie the game at 84-84.

In the final seconds, a turnover from the Lightning gave St. Thomas Aquinas the chance for a timeout to draw up the final play. Executing the play as it was written, Ethan Millirons canned a 3-pointer on the buzzer to give the Spartans the win.

Goldey-Beacom showed incredible efficiency, shooting 51 percent from the floor, with four players scoring in double figures.

Derry led with 28 points on 8-of-17 shooting, six assists and four steals, fellow senior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) closed with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, Marsh had 13 points and seven rebounds with freshman Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) adding 12 points for GBC (2-3).
