Men's Basketball Claims 88-66 Victory Over Mercy



Goldey-Beacom found itself on top in Sparkill, NY, taking an 88-66 victory over Mercy in non-conference play.
 
The Lightning jumped to a 41-33 first-half lead, helped by 13 points from senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) on 5-of-5 shooting, including three 3-pointers, and an additional 10 points and five steals from fellow senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ).
 
With 10:35 remaining, Jayden Dewaal went on a 9-2 solo run to bring Mercy to within 54-43 of the Lightning.
 
Sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) found himself spearheading an 18-6 Lightning run to close the game after canning a 3-pointer. In the final five minutes, with a 73-60 lead, Bates drained 12 points to secure the 88-66 win.
 
Goldey-Beacom showed great efficiency with 47-percent shooting in the game, and dominated Mercy on the defensive end, forcing 22 turnovers and grabbing 16 steals.
 
Bates recorded his first career double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds on 9-of-16 shooting, Derry finished with 21 points and five steals, Thomas closed with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and senior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) added 14 points for GBC (2-2).
 
Dewaal had 18 points and 17 rebounds, Taj Chiles poured in 16 points, and Alex May had 14 and six rebounds for Mercy (0-5).
 
Goldey-Beacom stays in Sparkill, NY for another day to take on Saint Thomas Aquinas on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
