Women’s Basketball Handed 68-52 by UDC in Season Opener



Goldey-Beacom rolled out a lineup that featured seven newcomers and was dealt a 68-52 loss by the District of Columbia at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Firebirds gained control in the second quarter by owning a 20-9 edge on the scoreboard, holding the Lightning to 18 percent shooting for a 38-23 halftime lead.  Laci Johnson scored five points in the period with Aiyana Ellis adding four.
 
The Lightning in the fourth displayed plenty of grit by playing to a 17-17 standstill.  Freshman Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA) was impressive in her debut with four points in that span and junior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) buried a 3-pointer.
 
Freshman Genesis Garcia (Aguada, PR) closed with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting in her collegiate debut, Yoder notched 10 and eight rebounds with senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) adding 11 rebounds for the Lightning (0-1).
 
Tori Williams scored 16 points, Destiny Ryles had 13 and eight rebounds, Nia Ford added 13 points and Ellis hauled in 11 rebounds for the Firebirds (1-0).
 
Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is home against New Haven at 1:00 pm, followed by the District of Columbia against Wilmington (DE) at 3:00 pm.
