Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Gets its Done Down the Stretch for an 87-84 Triumph at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom received great play all around and came up big in the final minutes when it counted the most for an 87-84 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Caldwell in Caldwell, NJ.

The opening half expectedly was a close battle with Caldwell owning a 38-34 lead after trailing by five points eight minutes in.  Junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) again gave the Lightning big play with nine points, freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) had six and eight rebounds with sophomore Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL) also netting six points.

It remained close late when Derrick Bueno made two free throws with 3:10 left to get the Cougars within 72-70.  But the Lightning had huge answers to follow on Marsh's layup with 2:50 to go and an old-fashioned three-point play from sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) to make it 77-70 with 93 seconds remaining.

Tyler Washington canned a jumper with 1:25 to go in getting Caldwell within 77-72.  Goldey-Beacom had to have an answer on the other end and did.  Judge got a big offensive rebound of Centeno's miss and was fouled before hitting 1-of-2 from the stripe with 1:16 remaining for a six-point game.

Darnell Evans' layup with 1:09 remaining got Caldwell within 78-74 and the home side received the ball back following a turnover in the backcourt.  Bueno continued his outstanding day by following Evans' miss on a tip-in with 56 seconds to go for a two-point contest.

Judge hit two free throws with 41 seconds left for an 80-76 game before Mark Heber's layup with 25 ticks remaining cut it to two.  Marsh came through thanks to a big layup with 20 seconds to go before Evans' layup six seconds later again reduced things to two.

Centeno continued the Lightning's proficiency from the foul line by draining two more with 12 seconds to go for an 84-80 game.  But the Cougars were not done with this game as Washington drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 5.6 seconds remaining for a one-point affair.

Centeno nailed two more from the stripe with 4.6 seconds to go for an 86-83 game.  Goldey-Beacom then wisely chose to foul in preventing a tying 3-pointer.  Evans missed the crucial first free throw with 2.4 seconds to go and then accidentally made the second in his attempt to deliberately miss.

Junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) made one from the stripe with 0.3 seconds left to finally bring on the final.

Centeno was the go-to man on this day, netting a season-best 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting for his fourth game this season with at least 20.  Marsh had 18 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, Judge netted 12 with Thomas and junior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) adding nine apiece.

This ultimately came down to free-throw shooting for the Lightning (5-10, 2-3 CACC), who went 21-for-26 in the second half and 26-for-32 overall.  This included the team going 11-for-13 in the final 3:34 with eight consecutive makes.

Bueno netted 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting off the bench, Heber scored 19, Evans poured in 18 with Washington adding 15 for the Cougars (8-7, 4-2).

Goldey-Beacom is home next Tuesday against Jefferson, beginning at 8:00 pm.  The women's game between the same schools is at 6:00 pm.
