Men's Basketball Claims 77-72 Win Over Jefferson

Four players in scoring in double figures helped Goldey-Beacom edge a 77-72 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Jefferson at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The first half was a tight battle, as expected, with the majority of the lead in favor of the Lightning. Goldey-Beacom led by as many as 13 points following an 8-0 run in 90 seconds. Sophomore Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL) netted six points on two 3-pointers in this time. A solid defensive effort by the Lightning held the league's leading scorer, Erik Timko, to just four points on five shots in the first half.

The Lightning maintained the lead throughout the second half, with Jefferson unable to break through. The Rams began to close on the lead with 2:46 left, after Timko scored a 3-pointer to spark a 7-2 run to close the score to 72-68 with 54 seconds remaining.

The final 40 seconds came down to free throws for the Lightning as the Rams attempted to keep the game alive. Junior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) was fouled on back-to-back possessions, sending him to the free throw line. Connecting on all three, the Lightning found themselves with a 75-68 cushion with 18 seconds left. Despite a final score by Antonin Kemkeng, the Rams ran out of time, and freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) netted two free throws to guarantee the win for the Lightning.

Junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) continued his consistent play with 18 points and Marsh, the CACC's reigning Rookie of the Week, notched 16 and 14 rebounds. This is his sixth double-double of the season and first in consecutive games.

Sophomores Trey Lewis (Herndon, VA) and Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) added 12 points apiece, with Collins finishing with nine points and seven rebounds for the Lightning (6-10, 3-3 CACC).

Timko recorded 18 points with Hakim Byrd adding 15 points for the Rams (8-8, 4-2).

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Bridgeport, beginning at 3:00 pm. This follows the women's game against the same school, which begins at 1:00 pm.
