Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Dealt Tough 84-81 Loss by Bridgeport

A tight non-divisional Central Collegiate Atlantic Conference game came down to the wire for Goldey-Beacom, which fell 84-81 to Bridgeport at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The first half saw baskets being traded each way, with scoring runs from both teams. Goldey-Beacom found itselves 10 points down in the middle of the half, which sparked a 12-2 run. Sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) and Freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) netted 10 points apiece to lead the Lightning 43-42 at halftime.

Goldey-Beacom clawed its way back from a 10-point deficit, going on a 9-0 run to trail 69-68 with 6:29 remaining. Junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) notched five points in this time. Taj Chiles finished a layup at the six minute mark to give Bridgeport a 71-68 lead, but Judge and Marsh had answers of their own with free throws and a layup to bring it to 73-72 in favor of the Purple Knights with 4:42 remaining.

Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes, before Matt Turner netted two free throws with 2:33 to go to give them a further 75-72 lead. The Purple Knights continued with momentum in their favor, with D'Andre Collins canning a three-pointer with 2:02 to go, before Centeno netted three free throws and assisted a layup by junior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) to bring the Lightning back to within three at 80-77 with 58 seconds to go.

Judge found himself with an open lane with 22 seconds to go, finishing a layup to reduce the deficit to just one. A strategic foul by the Lightning saw Turner finish two free throws with 14 seconds to go, putting the Purple Knight lead at 82-79. A quick answer by Centeno brought the Lightning back to a two-point affair with four seconds to go.

Another wise foul by the Lightning put Turner back on the stripe again, who was able to knock down both. Centeno tried a final three-pointer to force the game into overtime, but was unable to connect.

Marsh, who has shown nothing by impressive play throughout the season, found himself leading the Lightning once again. Recording 21 points and 11 rebounds, this becomes his seventh double-double of the season and second in consecutive games.

Centeno and Judge both showed efficiency in the game, each going 100 percent from the free throw line. Centeno netted 17 points on 4-of-8 shooting and Judge notched 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Collins finished with 14 points of his own for GBC (6-11, 3-4 CACC).

Turner finished with 28 points, Tim Dawson added 13, Moye and Mason Williams each added 10 apiece, and Taj Chiles dished eight assists for Bridgeport (9-8, 5-4).

Goldey-Beacom faces local-rival Wilmington (DE) at home next Tuesday. The game begins at 8:00 pm, with follows the women's contest between the same schools beginning at 6:00 pm.
