Men's Basketball Dealt 59-57 Loss in Tough Battle Against Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom faced a huge test against local-rival Wilmington (DE) in an always great battle between two solid programs, one that saw a heartbreaking 59-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The first half saw both teams trading baskets with even numbers across the board. Despite ending the half with a 12-5 run by the Lightning, it was not quite enough to get the upper hand at half time. The visitors led 30-28 at the half. Freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) netted nine of his 10 first half points in that span.

A mid-half 9-4 run by the Lightning gave them a 46-45 lead with 10:06 remaining. The Wildcats attempted to grasp the momentum with a layup and two free throws, but the Lightning were quick to cut that off with a breakaway dunk from junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY).

Marsh gathered in an offense rebound and finished with 5:48 left to give the Lightning a 54-51 lead. Caleb Matthews countered for the Wildcats, canning two free throws to cut the Lightning's lead to one.

The next four minutes showed scoring droughts for both teams, with tensions rising. With 1:35 remaining, Marcus Pierce nailed a breakaway layup to lift the Wildcats to a 55-54 lead. But the Lightning were not out. Sophomore Kevon Ferguson (Brooklyn, NY) canned a 3-pointer from the left corner, giving the lead once again to the Lightning, 57-55 with 33 seconds left.

A foul sent Wilmington's Randy Rickards to the free-throw line. The pressure of the Jones Center forced him to go 1-for-2 and keep the Lightning in the lead with 20 seconds remaining. With the ball in the Lightning's possession three-quarters into the backcourt, a pass just short of Marsh was tipped by Rickards, leading to a layup from Taalib Holloman and the Wildcats a 58-57 lead with 14 seconds remaining.

The Lightning, unable to get themselves a chance at the win, were forced to foul with three seconds left.  Matthews went to the free throw line and connected on the first for a 59-57 game.  He missed the second and Goldey-Beacom, with no timeouts, was unable to get off a shot.

Marsh, who has been a dominant force, recording his third double-double in consecutive games with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ferguson notched 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and Thomas added 10 for GBC (6-12, 3-5 CACC).

Amiri Stewart closed with 12 points, Rickards finished with 10 and Justin Thomas added nine for Wilmington (9-8, 3-5).

Goldey-Beacom heads up to Post this Saturday, with a 3:00 pm game, following the women's contest at 1:00 pm.
