Women’s Basketball’s Rally Falls Short in 75-73 Loss at Post

Goldey-Beacom nearly rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final minute, but its last-ditch effort fell just short in a 75-73 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Post in Waterbury, CT.

GBC was in a 66-58 hole before senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) hit a layup with 40 seconds left, getting her squad within six.  Tyree Allen made just one from the stripe for the Eagles with 38 seconds to go for a 67-60 contest and senior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) hit a layup on the other end for a five-point game.

Tyara McQueen hit twice from the stripe with 35 seconds left to give Post a 69-62 lead.  Harrison made a layup with 26 seconds to go for a five-point game and, after Taina Pagan missed twice from the line, senior Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan) hit twice from the stripe with 21 seconds to go for a 69-66 contest.

Sha'Raya Haines made two from the line with 17 seconds left for a 71-66 Post advantage before Izumi's layup three seconds later cut it to three.  Haines countered with one free throw with 10 seconds remaining for a 72-68 contest, but Izumi continued to put the team on her back by hitting a jumper with 7.2 seconds to go for a two-point game.

Allen made two from the stripe with 5.9 seconds left for a 74-70 game, but Izumi was not done.  She canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key with one second left for a one-point contest.  Haines hit once from the line with 0.6 seconds to go, but the Lightning could not get off a potential game-winning shot.

Izumi was unbelievable in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points in the period on 4-of-5 shooting as part of her 13 points.  Harrison scored 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting and was 9-for-11 from the line.  She now is averaged 20.3 points over her last three contests.

Freshman Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) scored 12 points with Speaks adding nine and eight rebounds for the Lightning (7-12, 4-5 CACC).

Haines poured in 30 points and was 15-for-18 from the line.  Allen netted 17 with Tijanae Simmons adding 10 for the Eagles (12-8, 7-3).

Post in the second quarter had it going on offense, scoring the last 13 points of the first half in just under four minutes to open a 34-26 lead.  Simmons went on a tear with seven points in that time, canning a 3-pointer before netting four free throws.

The Eagles in the period outscored the Lightning 20-5 despite shooting just 36 percent (4-of-11) from the floor, but went 10-for-10 from the foul line.  Haines poured in nine points in that span, in addition to Simmons' seven points.

Goldey-Beacom is off until Sunday, January 29, when it faces Alliance as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  Game time is at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
