Women’s Basketball Falls, 90-67, to No. 19 Jefferson



Goldey-Beacom did its best to hold down a scoring machine in 19th-ranked Jefferson, but was dealt a 90-67 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Rams in the opening quarter began to assert itself, using a 16-5 run to open a 22-10 lead with 40 seconds left.  Emma Kuczynski scored five points in that time with Sam Yencha adding four.
 
The Lightning in the second got a 3-pointer from freshman Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE), who paces the conference in three-point percentage, in helping her side close to 25-17 with 8:23 left.  But the Rams followed with an 18-10 spurt in gaining a 43-27 cushion with 1:27 to go in the half, courtesy of Kuczynski's nine points.
 
Jefferson at the half had all the momentum with a 49-31 lead, shooting 47 percent (18-of-38) from the floor and 11-for-15 from the foul line.  Kuczynski scored 14 points, Yencha netted 10 with Cassie Murphy and Emily Keehfuss adding eight apiece.
 
Goldey-Beacom in the second quarter did its best by shooting 58 percent (7-of-12) from the field, but could not overcome nine turnovers.
 
Senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) closed with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting, Ciszkowski had 11 to go with three 3-pointers, senior Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, NJ) netted seven with junior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) also scoring seven for GBC (5-11, 2-4 CACC).
 
Kuczynski had a night with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, Yencha also flourished with 12 and 15 rebounds and Morgan Robinson closed with 17 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and six steals.  Murphy poured in 16 points, Haley Meinel netted 11 with Keehfuss adding 10 for the Rams (14-2, 6-0).
 
Jefferson came into tonight ranked second in East Region, also according to D2SIDA just like its national placing.
 
Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Bridgeport as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  Game time is at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
