Softball Gives Solid Effort in Two Games vs. First-Place Georgian Court

Going against a squad that is undefeated this year in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play, Goldey-Beacom more than held its own against Georgian Court in a pair of setbacks by scores of 9-4 and 6-2 in Lakewood, NJ.

Continuing to sport a roster which features 10 newcomers, the Lightning have shown marked improvement under first-year coach Juli Greep the entire campaign and today was further proof against a squad that now has won 12 consecutive games.

Goldey-Beacom in game one looked like it had taken a huge step toward a big victory with three runs in the fourth inning for a 3-1 lead.  Junior Bianca Newsom (Edison, NJ) had a leadoff double, senior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, NJ) notched a one-out single and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) chased all of them home with a three-run blast for her second homer of the year.

But the Lions took control in the sixth with seven runs for a 9-3 lead.  After two runs scored on errors, Georgian Court loaded the bases before Kaitlyn Stufft cleared things with a grand slam.

Henriquez lined one down the left-field line in the seventh, plating Newsom for the final.

Newsom, Henriquez and junior Carly Setting (Middletown, DE) all had two hits with freshman Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) recording five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings for the Lightning.

Mikayla Gilgert struck out four over 5 1/3 innings and Sarah Clancy notched three strikeouts for the Lions.

Georgian Court in game two cracked the scoreboard on Taylor Barraza's RBI single and then made it 2-0 in the fifth on Alyssa Rue's sacrifice fly.  The home side got four more in the sixth for a 6-0 margin, keyed by Adriana Mungo's RBI double and Stufft's sacrifice fly.

Newsom finished the scoring with a two-run double in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Kelly Forrest (Middletown, DE) went 2-for-2 for the Lightning (16-17, 4-10 CACC) with nine different players getting a hit for the Lions (25-9, 14-0).  Haley Korsak struck out two over seven innings for Georgian Court.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday against Jefferson, beginning at 2:00 pm.
