Softball Downs Malone University 10-1; Game Two Against Barton Postponed

Goldey-Beacom sought redemption in its return to action on Wednesday, taking a 10-1 victory over Malone University in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Little River, SC.

Malone took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning after Lauren Bennett doubled a line drive to left field, scoring Lexi Betz.

Goldey-Beacom got things going in the second inning, taking a 2-1 lead after sophomore Hannah Davis (Bethel, Del.) doubled on a line drive to center field to score junior Kayla Vaillancourt (Edgewater, MD.) and senior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, N.J.).

In the following play, junior Bianca Newsom (Edison, N.J.) scored on a passed ball as freshman Carly Setting (Middletown, Del.) committed a sacrifice fly to bring home Davis, 4-1.

Two more runs in the third inning extended the Lightning lead, capped by a single to center field by Newsom, scoring Henriquez, 6-1.

The Lightning recorded a pair of runs in the fourth inning leading off with a double hit on a fly ball to right field by freshman Kelly Forrest (Middletown, Del.) to score sophomore Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, N.J.), 7-1. Freshman Alex Lowry (Wenonah, N.J.) reached on a dropped third strike that scored senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD.), 8-1.

A solid defensive effort throughout the ball game allowed Goldey-Beacom to leave no room for Malone to close the gap.

The Lightning put up two final runs in the sixth inning. A single to the third baseman by Vaillancourt scored Henriquez, 9-1, and a single line drive to right field by Davis, scored Vaillancourt in the final 10-1 victory.

Makin closed with three hits and now has a hit in eight of the Lightning's games.  Setting singled in the first inning and has a hit in all nine contests this season, the program's longest hitting streak since Paulynn Mao went on a 10-game run in 2017.

Freshman Abby Husser (Bethlehem, PA.) secured the win, pitching five innings, giving up four hits, a single run while walking one.  Freshman Morgan McLane (Clayton, Del.) threw a single inning, striking out two for the Lightning (5-4).

Goldey-Beacom has an early start on Thursday morning as it faces Malone University on NMB Field 8 starting at 9:30am.
