Softball Begins Day One of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with Two Wins

Goldey-Beacom opened its trip to Little River, SC on Sunday with back-to-back wins, taking game one over Keiser, 9-2, and game two 10-0 against Iowa Wesleyan in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

Goldey-Beacom jumped to a three-run lead in the first inning, capped by a two-run single to center field by sophomore Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, N.J.), scoring freshman Carly Setting (Middletown, Del.) and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD.).

Keiser put up a single run in the second inning after Cassie Querry singled to left field, scoring Kassie Reid, 3-1.

The Lightning struck in the third inning, adding four runs to the scoreboard. Makin had a single down the left-field line scored Jordan for a 4-1 margin.  A bunt single from senior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, N.J.) led to a throwing error by the shortstop, scoring sophomore Jazlee Rojas (Smyrna, Del.), Makin and Henriquez to make it 7-1.

Keiser added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single up the middle from Madison Manning that scored Querry for a 7-2 score.

It was not enough as Goldey-Beacom put up a pair of runs in the seventh inning.  Henriquez stole second and freshman Alex Lowry (Wenonah, N.J.) stole home for an 8-2 game.  An infield single by junior Bianca Newsom (Edison, N.J.) drove home Henriquez for the 9-2 final victory.

Henriquez recorded three hits with Jordan and Making each getting two.

Sophomore Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, Pa.) pitched a complete game, striking out two and giving up a single walk on the win (1-1).

In game two, the Lightning kept their momentum by burying the Tigers in the first inning with five runs. Newsom had the key blow with a two-run double that made it 5-0.

Goldey-Beacom left no room for Iowa Wesleyan to gain a run, putting up four more runs in the second inning to exhaust the Tigers. Henriquez and Newsom each had RBI singles in the frame for a 9-0 margin.

One final run in the third inning electrified the Lightning on a triple by Setting that scored freshman Bri Snover (Claymont, Del.).

Jordan recorded the win (3-0), pitching three innings, striking out four, allowing a single hit and a pair of walks. Freshman Morgan McLane (Clayton, Del.) tossed a pair of innings, striking out two for the Lightning (4-2).

Senior leader Jaeda Henriquez on the day "Today was amazing the team gave it all we had and came together to give us two wins and we're hungry for more."

Coach Juli Greep on the day, "Our three pitchers today did a fantastic job of hitting their spots and keeping their hitters off balance. The defense was solid and offensively we made great adjustments. We look forward to our next set of games and getting better one pitch at a time."

Goldey-Beacom continues play in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Monday. Game one is against Keiser University on Central Park Field 2 at 1:30 pm, followed by Madonna on Central Park Field 3 at 3:30 pm.
