Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits a Pair at University of the Sciences

Junior Carly Setting (Middletown, DE) notched three RBI in the nightcap and help spearhead an eight-run fifth inning for Goldey-Beacom in a 9-1 victory over University of the Sciences that followed a 5-1 loss at FDR Park in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning in game two got the tone set in the third inning for a 1-0 lead.  Junior Kayla Vaillancourt (Edgewater, MD) drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sacrifice from sophomore Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) and scored on Setting's single to right.

That was only the beginning for Setting, whose two-run single in the fifth began to open the floodgates for a 3-0 margin.  Senior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, NJ) lined a two-RBI single, was chased home on a single from senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD), sophomore Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) lined an RBI triple with freshman Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) and junior Bianca Newsom (Edison, NJ) each adding run-scoring singles.

This continues the solid play for Setting, who is on a six-game hitting streak after getting a hit in each of her first nine contests.  She has a hit in 16 of the 19 contests she has played this season.

Setting and Henriquez closed with two hits apiece.  McLane (2-2) got the victory after striking out four over five innings, yielding just one run and four hits.

Lauren Del Giudice broke up the shutout with an inside-the-park home run in the fifth for the Devils.  Paige Schlechter (1-5) allowed five runs – four earned – and three hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Goldey-Beacom in game one continued to show improvement against traditionally tough squads, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Freshman Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) stroked a leadoff double, took third on Makin's groundout and scored on a single from freshman Kelly Forrest (Middletown, DE).

The Devils tied things in the third on Ashley Steiner's sacrifice fly and then scored twice in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.  Abbigail Markee lined the go-ahead single to score Kaitlin Thompson and Steiner got her second RBI with a single that plated Gabrielle Simms.

Jordan and sophomore Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) each had a strikeout in the circle for the Lightning (9-10, 1-3 CACC).

Megan Master struck out three over seven innings with Simms, Steiner and Nina Cencetti each getting two hits for USciences (3-13, 1-3).

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Dominican (NY), beginning at 1:00 pm at the Jackson Complex.
