Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Inches Closer in CACC South With Heartstopping 73-69 Victory at Regionally Ranked Jefferson

Clutch shooting, strong defense and many pulse checks were in the forefront for Goldey-Beacom, which moved within one-half game of second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division with a 73-69 victory at Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom had the lead a majority of the second half and looked to shake Jefferson, ranked fourth in the latest D2SIDA East Region poll.  That was strengthened with 2:12 left when sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) rebounded his own miss and found junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA), whose layup gave the Lightning a 65-61 cushion.

Deondre Bourne continued his outstanding night for the Rams by canning two free throws with 2:03 to play for a 65-63 contest.  Derry would not let his side down on the other end, drilling a huge jumper with 1:38 remaining to restore the four-point margin.

Bourne could not connect on the other end for Jefferson and Derry once again was on the spot with a big rebound.  Ligonde then hit once from the stripe with 1:17 to go for a 68-63 game.

After empty possessions on each end, Bourne had the home crowd going when he canned a 3-pointer and was fouled with 39 seconds left.  He missed the free throw, but had brought his side to a 68-66 deficit.

Now it was time for the Lightning to respond and to no one's surprise, Derry came through.  He calmly nailed two free throws with 34 seconds to play that gave the Lightning a 70-66 lead.

Bourne again hit a 3-pointer, this time with 23 seconds left for a 70-69 game, but senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) did his best Derry impression by drilling two from the line two seconds later for a three-point margin.

Goldey-Beacom then looked like it had a defensive stop when sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) stripped Darius Kennel just outside the three-point arc and the two held the ball, but the possession arrow favored Jefferson and another defensive stop was required.

The Lightning held their breath when Kinnel missed a 3-pointer, Bismark Nsiah got the rebound and Bourne could not hit the tying bucket.  Ligonde corralled the rebound and hit once from the line with 0.6 seconds remaining for the final.

Derry's point total might not be his highest of the season, but this arguably might have been his finest game wearing the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold.  He ended with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, getting 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the second half.  The six-time member this season of the CACC Weekly Honor Roll has scored at least 20 points eight times in 2021-22 and is averaging 28.0 points over his last four contests.

Jones netted 14 points, Ligonde amassed 11 and seven rebounds with Collins getting 11, seven and seven assists.

Goldey-Beacom (11-10, 7-5 CACC) climbed within one-half game of Chestnut Hill (8-5) for second place in the division.  The top two teams in the North and South Divisions host a quarterfinal game in the CACC Tournament.

Bourne poured in 19 points, Kinnel scored 16 and Nsiah added 13 and 10 for the Rams (15-5, 11-2), who remain atop the CACC South Division despite having their five-game winning streak halted.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits Bloomfield for a 3:00 pm contest.  The women's game between the same schools precedes it at 1:00 pm.
