Softball Opens 2022 Season with 2-0 Sweep Over Washington Adventist

Goldey-Beacom opened its 2022 season on a high note, securing back-to-back wins over non-conference opponent Washington Adventist University by taking game one 9-4 and game two 12-4 in Takoma Park, MD.

Today marks the first set of wins for new head coach Juli Greep, who entered following a successful 10-year run at Wesley College in which she exited as the program's winningest coach with 168 triumphs.

In game one, Goldey-Beacom snatched a fifth-inning lead at 4-2 with three runs.  Senior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, NJ) singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, junior Kayla Vaillancourt (Edgewater, MD) walked and scored, and sophomore Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) recorded a single before crossing home on a single from junior Bianca Newsom (Edison, NJ).

With a 6-3 lead going into the top of the seventh inning, Goldey-Beacom added to its advantage by putting up three runs in the inning. Freshman Kelly Forrest (Middletown, Del.) and sophomore Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) each had RBI singles and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) saw her fly ball result in an error for another run.

Freshman Devon Ellixson (Mullica Hill, N.J.) pitched three innings, allowing no hits and one run with seven strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Morgan McLane (Clayton, Del.) got her first collegiate victory after tossing three innings and Jordan pitched the seventh.

Makin rapped three hits with Jordan and freshman Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) getting two apiece.

Delilah Garcia pitched seven innings for Washington Adventist, allowing 14 hits and nine runs with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Lightning (2-0) set the tone in game one by nailing 16 hits as a team.

In game two, the Lightning kept their momentum from game one and took an early lead when Makin's sacrifice fly to center field scored Newsom for a 1-0 lead.

Goldey-Beacom exhausted Washington Adventist, leading 7-0, not allowing a single run until the bottom of the fourth inning by giving up a walk. The Lightning responded in the fifth inning, gaining five runs.  Vaillancourt had an RBI double and Newsom ripped a two-run triple to highlight the frame.

Freshman Abby Husser (Bethlehem, PA.) earned the win (1-0) surrendering one run and one hit over four innings with five strikeouts. Jordan pitched the fifth inning in relief.

Jasmine Hernandez pitched five innings, allowing 16 hits and 12 runs with three strikeouts and one walk for Washington Adventist (0-2).

Davis amassed three hits with Newsom, Makin, Vaillancourt, Forrest and junior Lexi Thomas (Westville, NJ) getting two apiece.

Goldey-Beacom hosts Washington Adventist on Sunday, February 20 in its final double-header matchup. Game one begins at 1:00 pm.

Thoughts from Coach Juli Greep:
"The doubleheader over all was a success.  We had some growing pains, but it was great day overall. It's always nice to start a season with wins. Our freshman pitchers (Devon Ellixson and Abby Husser) really did a great job keeping them off balance and offensively Nicole Makin really had a great day at the plate.  Defensively, Bianca Newsom made some fantastic plays up the middle to shut down their offensive attack.  We look forward to getting back on the field 20th and hope to continue our early season success."
