Softball Plays Tough in Doubleheader Against Bloomsburg

Another strong showing from a young Goldey-Beacom squad was not enough against a perennially strong foe in Bloomsburg as it was handed a pair of losses, 13-2 and 4-0, at Maplezone in Aston, PA.

The Lightning (2-2) continue to show plenty of promise with 10 new players under first-year coach Juli Greep, who helped revitalize the program at Wesley.

Youth would not be served in game one with the Huskies scoring eight times in the top of the first inning.  Kayleigh Lenner had the big blow with a three-run, inside-the-park home run to cap the scoring.  Erin DelPierre and Alexis Wetzler each drew bases-loaded walks in the frame and Danielle Barnes had an RBI single.

GBC got a run in the fourth when freshman Carly Setting (Newark, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly and another in the fifth on an RBI single from junior Kayla Vaillancourt (Edgewater, MD).

Vaillancourt, sophomore Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) and senior Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) each had two hits in the opener for the Lightning.

Savannah Doney (2-1) allowed two runs and 10 hits with two strikeouts for Bloomsburg (4-2).

The nightcap also saw the Huskies take the lead for good in the opening frame with Alex Iseminger stroking a two-run homer.  Bella Culp added an RBI double in the second and Nicolette Ray added a run-scoring bunt single in the fifth.

Freshman Abby Husser (Bethlehem, PA) had a double and Setting added a single for the Lightning (2-2).

Callie Sowers struck out seven over seven innings for the Huskies, pitching a two-hit shutout.

Goldey-Beacom is scheduled to play its Pike Creek opener on Thursday in a rescheduled doubleheader against Washington Adventist.  Game time is at 12:30 pm.
