Men’s Basketball Owns the Second Half in 81-70 Triumph Over Nyack



Goldey-Beacom thoroughly dominated play in the second half and moved into a tie for second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division with an 81-70 victory over Nyack at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning in the second half owned a 42-23 edge on the scoreboard by shooting a commanding 58 percent (14-of-24) from the field and holding the Warriors to just 30 percent (8-of-27), including 0-of-9 from three-point range.  Sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) netted 11 points in that span, senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) scored 10 with junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) and sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) pouring in eight apiece.
 
What ultimately pulled the Lightning through was a 36-8 run bridging both halves in just over 15 minutes for a 72-55 lead with 5:15 remaining.  Derry scored 11 points in that span with Jones adding 10, helping their side shoot 13-of-20 from the floor and limiting the visitors to only 4-of-17.
 
Ligonde, today picked to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll for a fourth time this season, ended with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting with 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the campaign.  Derry netted 17 points, Jones scored 14 with sophomore Zack Oree (Newark, NJ) adding 10 for Goldey-Beacom, which shot 53 percent (14-of-24) from the floor.
 
Derry nailed two 3-pointers to give him 126 career, moving into sixth place on the school's career list.  His program-record single-season total now is at 90.
 
Joel Bailey netted 22 points with Isayas Aris adding 14 for Nyack (10-12, 7-8 CACC), which shot 46 percent (8-of-27) from the field.
 
Goldey-Beacom (13-12, 9-7) is level with Chestnut Hill (9-7) for second in the division with the top two teams hosting a quarterfinal next Tuesday in the CACC Tournament.
 
Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Holy Family for a 7:30 pm contest, which follows the women's 5:30 pm game.
