Men’s Basketball Rallies From 25 Down for an 80-78 Overtime Victory at Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom incredibly worked its way out of a 25-point, second-half hole and remained tied for second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division with an 80-78 overtime victory at Holy Family in Philadelphia.

The Lightning were in a 52-27 quagmire with 13:18 remaining before they began chopping away, showing great poise in not rushing anything and getting the Tigers in a world of foul trouble.  When the major run was over, GBC had used a 29-5 spurt in moving to a 57-56 deficit with 5:18 left thanks to 12 points from junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA).

Holy Family looked like it had regained momentum when Kharon Randolph nailed two free throws with 1:54 remaining for a 66-60 lead.  But the Lightning scored the next seven points, aided by a massive 3-pointer from sophomore Zack Oree (Newark, NJ) with 1:19 to go and two free throws from senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) with 56 seconds to play for a 67-66 lead.

After missed possessions on each end, Randolph buried a triple with 15 seconds to go for a 69-67 Holy Family margin.  Goldey-Beacom rushed the ball up looking to catch the defense off guard and did, getting a jumper from sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) with seven seconds to go for a 69-69 tie.

The Lightning's defense again came up big in not allowing the Tigers a shot at the end of regulation.  By then, Goldey-Beacom had forced Holy Family into 12 turnovers in the second half and to see four of the home team's players foul out.

Goldey-Beacom opened the extra session on a 9-2 run for a 78-71 lead with 80 seconds left, courtesy of four points from sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ).  Manny Toha hit a 3-pointer 10 seconds later and Randolph added a free throw with 44 seconds to play for a 78-75 game.

But Oree continued his biggest game in the Navy Blue and Vegas Golf, hitting a big jumper with 27 seconds to go for an 80-75 contest.

Toha hit twice from the stripe with 23 seconds left for an 80-77 game and the Tigers got the ball back following missed free throws.  But Toha misfired on a 3-pointer and Ligonde hauled in the rebound.

However, Ligonde missed twice from the line with 4.8 seconds remaining and Toha got the rebound.  He was fouled right away in hopes of not getting off a 3-pointer, made the first free throw with 2.9 seconds left and intentionally missed the second, but freshman Kevon Ferguson (Brooklyn, NY) got the rebound for GBC.

His missed both free throws with 1.7 seconds left and the Tigers' desperation heave at the buzzer went awry.

Ligonde ended with a career-best 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting to go with 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, just two days after being named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll a fourth time.

Derry scored 13 points, Oree netted 11 huge points and Collins grabbed 11 rebounds.

Randolph scored 21 points, Rick'Keem Mixon netted 15 before fouling out, Toha poured in 13 and David Robinson added 10 before he fouled out for the Tigers (14-13, 9-9 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (14-12, 10-7) remains level with Chestnut Hill (10-7) for second in the South Division with one game left and the latter owning the tiebreaker.  The top two teams in each of the two divisions gets a home quarterfinal game in the conference tournament next Tuesday.

Goldey-Beacom ends its regular season Saturday against Wilmington with a 3:00 pm home contest.  The women's contest between the same schools precedes it at 1:00 pm.
