Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Dealt 68-58 Loss at Mercy

Goldey-Beacom continued to forge a battle on the court, but came up just short late in the contest for a 68-58 loss at Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Goldey-Beacom late in the opening half scored 11 straight points over 2 1/2 minutes in closing to a 28-24 deficit with 1:13 left.  Senior Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan) scored six points in that time with freshman Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) adding a 3-pointer.

The margin was at 38-32 before the Lightning reeled off eight straight points in gaining a 40-38 lead with 2:07 left in the third quarter.  Izumi went 6-for-6 from the foul line in that span.

The Mavericks responded with an 8-1 run to end the period for a 46-41 lead, helped by Jaclyn Stanavich's old-fashioned three-point play.

Goldey-Beacom once again took its turn with the momentum, using a 9-3 burst to gain a 50-49 lead with 5:12 left.  Lemon began it with a 3-pointer and senior Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, NJ) ended it with a layup.

Asha Talib canned two free throws with 4:42 remaining to put the Mavericks ahead, 51-50.  A turnover gave the home side the ball again and sent Maria Tedesco to the line.  She made the first free throw and after missing the second, Talib got the offensive rebound and Katie Wall nailed a massive 3-pointer with 4:11 to go for a 55-50 margin.

Senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) hit a jumper with 3:48 left for a 55-52 contest.  Taysha Bender made a layup for Mercy with 3:31 remaining and, following a GBC miss, nailed two from the stripe with 3:18 to go for a 59-52 game.

Following a series of empty possessions, Wall's layup with 2:49 remaining gave Mercy a 61-52 lead that all but ended things.

Izumi continued her strong play, tying a career high with 16 points that included six rebounds to fall one short of a personal best for the Lightning (4-8).  Speaks poured in 10 points, Gardner scored nine and senior Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) recorded a career-high nine steals.

Wall scored 21 points in going 12-for-13 from the line to go with eight rebounds for the Mavericks (6-6).  Bender added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom is off until December 29, when it hosts No. 22 Daemen.  Game time at the Jones Center is at 2:00 pm.
