Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Handed 80-67 Loss by Shippensburg

Goldey-Beacom showed solid play in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a tough second quarter in an 80-67 loss to Shippensburg at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Raiders in the second quarter established momentum by outscoring the Lightning 22-11 and shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) from the floor with six 3-pointers.  Treasure George, Ariel Jones and Erin Gibbons all scored six points in the frame.

Goldey-Beacom began to chip away in the second half, using a 19-10 run bridging both quarters in closing to 61-53 with 7:59 left.  Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) netted five points in that time with fellow senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) and freshman Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) netting four apiece.

But Shippensburg put away things with a 12-6 spurt that gave it a 73-59 lead with 4:47 left.  Jones netted five points in that time, ending it with a pair of free throws.

Senior Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan) continued to dazzle for the Lightning, pouring in a career-best 16 points one game after getting 14 on Sunday vs. No. 14 Indiana (PA).  It was her fourth game this season scoring in double figures.

Speaks netted 14 points, Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) closed with 11 and fellow senior Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, NJ) hauled in a season-best eight rebounds for the Lightning (3-7).

Harrison now is in sole possession of 12th place in program history with 915 points and moves to 10th in program annals with 376 field goals.  Speaks had two steals, jumping to eighth in team history with 131 career.

Gibbons poured in 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, Jones netted 16, Abbie Miller and Mya Woodyard scored 12 apiece, George had 11 and Lauren Pettis added 10 rebounds for the Raiders (7-1), who entered third in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Staten Island.  Please note that game is a 1:30 pm start.
