Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls, 88-79, at Adelphi

Goldey-Beacom found itself behind early and struggled to climb its way back, falling 88-79 in non-conference play against Adelphi in Garden City, NY.

A long journey for the Lightning did not seem to phase them, beginning the first half with plenty of energy. The Lightning battled with the Panthers, keeping the score fairly even. Five minutes into the half, the Lightning found themselves trailing by just three points, with six of the Lightning's 11 points coming from freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) on 3-of-4 shooting.

It was here that the Panthers began to slip away. Four three pointers on six possessions gave the Panthers a nine-point lead, forcing the Lightning to take a timeout. The Panthers continued to slip away, with the Lightning trailing by as many as 13 with 8 ½ minutes left. However, the Lightning hung on, outscoring the Panthers 16-10 in the final eight minutes of the half to trail 42-35 at halftime.

The second half began with a 9-0 run by the Panthers, led by Ronnie Silva with seven of those points. The Lightning battled to decrease the deficit, trading scores with Adelphi. Goldey-Beacom had some breakthrough at the 13-minute mark, following a layup by sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) to begin a 9-0 scoring run to decrease Adelphi's lead to 10.

The Lightning's final run to capture the lead began with five minutes left in the half. Junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) led the Lightning to a 16-7 run to get the deficit to seven. Thomas notched 12 of his 15 second half points in this time on 4-of-4 shooting in just 3 ½ minutes. Despite the offensive effort, the Lightning were unable to notch the lead, with the Panthers committing two turnovers to the Lightning's seven in the second half.

Both teams showed relatively even shooting percentages for the game, with the Lightning shooting 48-percent to the Panthers 50-percent. However, the Panthers defensive effort claimed them the win, forcing the Lightning to 15 turnovers and committing only two.

Marsh led the Lightning with 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Thomas showed impressive play, notching 17 points, with 15 second half points, on 6-of-8 shooting and 5-of-7 from three-point range. Freshman Omari Banks (Middletown, DE) added 10 points of his own for GBC (3-6, 1-1 CACC).

Silva led the way for the Panthers, finishing with 29 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and five assists. Elijah Lewis closed with 26 points and eight rebounds, while Matthew Price added 12 points for Adelphi (4-7, 0-6 NE10).

Goldey-Beacom return to the Joseph West Jones Center on Wednesday to face Cheyney at 6:00pm.
