Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Gives No. 14 Indiana (PA) a Battle in 77-65 Road Setback

There are times in which the final score does not dictate how a game went.  This was one of them as Goldey-Beacom played solidly throughout and gave No. 14 Indiana (PA) all it could handle in a tough 77-65 loss in Indiana, PA.

Goldey-Beacom shook off a tough first quarter in which it seemingly outplayed the home side over the final three periods.  The Lightning's experienced roster continued to flourish and exceedingly show potential with 19 games left in the season that include 15 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

IUP in the opening quarter seemingly hit everything, shooting 64 percent (7-of-11) from the field that included 4-of-5 from three-point range in opening a 24-13 lead.  Alana Cardona poured in nine points on 3-of-3 shooting with Maria Cerro adding eight.

GBC in the second quarter found its game and went on an 11-3 run over four minutes, closing to 39-34 with 45 seconds left in the half.  Senior Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan) scored five points in that time and junior Mickey Williams (Wamboin, Australia) ended it with a great steal, which led to an easy layup.

The Lightning (3-6) continued their pressure on the Crimson Hawks into the third quarter, using a 13-3 run in just under six minutes in closing to a 53-52 deficit with 2:21 left.  Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) poured in six points during that time with fellow sophomore Jenissa Varela (Ledyard, CT) adding four.

But IUP quickly responded, scoring the next seven points to open a 60-52 margin with 1:29 remaining in the period.  Gina Adams canned a 3-pointer for the home team's only field goal in that span.

The Crimson Hawks early in the fourth quarter went on a 9-3 run in just under four minutes to open a 69-61 cushion with 5:10 left.  Adams again was on the spot with six points and Cardona nailed three free throws.

Senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) had yet another solid outing with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting over just 23 minutes.  It is her sixth double-figure outing of the season and she fell just two points shy of her season best from November 19 against Seton Hill.

Izumi matched her career best with 14 points, also accomplished December 15, 2021 against the District of Columbia.  Williams finished with 11 points, one game after netting a career-best 25 on Tuesday vs. Georgian Court.

Cerro poured in 20 points, Cardona had 16 and nine rebounds, Adams notched 14 and six with Kiera Baughman also netting 14 points for IUP (7-0), which is tops in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Shippensburg, which is tied for third in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.  Game time is at 6:00 pm.
