Women’s Basketball Staves Off Bowie State in Thrilling 67-62 Triumph

Goldey-Beacom made some key baskets late and got a huge victory before a raucous crowd, 67-62 over Bowie State at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning were looking for answers after the Bulldogs Anii Harris hit one of two from the foul line with 1:51 left for a 59-57 visitors lead.  The home side promptly turned it over, but the Bulldogs next possession was an empty one as senior Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) came up with a massive steal.

GBC then worked it down and sophomore Jenissa Varela (Ledyard, CT) fed a pass to senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE), who buried a 3-pointer from the right corner with 1:17 remaining for a 60-59 lead.

Bowie State looked for the lead back with 53 seconds to go, but Jayla Irvin missed twice from the line with Varela rebounding the second.  Goldey-Beacom (2-4) on the next possession took advantage of the first available opportunity, getting a layup from senior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) off Varela's feed with 48 seconds left for a 62-59 game.

Robyn Howard made one from the stripe with 27 seconds left to get the Bulldogs within 62-60, but Weikert responded with two big free throws with 15 seconds to play for a four-point contest.

Irvin offset her two previous misses with two free throws for a 64-62 game with 12 seconds left, but Speaks dropped home two from the stripe with eight seconds remaining to restore the four-point margin.

Speaks again put up another solid effort, scoring 14 points to go with five rebounds and three 3-pointers.  It is the fifth time in the Lightning's six games this season she has scored in double figures.

Harrison also closed with 14 points and five rebounds, giving her three double-figure games in the young season.  Senior Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, NJ) netted eight points and junior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) added seven for GBC, which shot 41 percent (23-of-56) from the floor.

Harris scored 22 points, Irvin netted 15 with Jazmyne Scott adding 15 rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-4), who hauled in 27 offensive rebounds but were held to 28 percent shooting (21-of-74), 1-of-13 from 3-point range and 19-for-35 from the line.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Holy Family as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  Game time is at 1:00 pm, followed by the men playing at 3:00 pm.
