Men’s Basketball Drops Home Opener, 95-70, to Saint Thomas Aquinas

The friendly confines of the Jones Center awaited Goldey-Beacom in its home opener, but Saint Thomas Aquinas played spoilers in dealing the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold a 95-70 loss in Wilmington, DE.

Both teams in the opening half put up solid numbers with the Spartans shooting 47 percent (17-of-36) from the floor and the Lightning going at a 45 percent clip (13-of-29).  But STAC canned six 3-pointers in that span and went 6-for-6 from the line in opening a 46-37 lead.

Antonio Vendola led a balanced attack with 10 points in that time for the Spartans.  Sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) scored 13 for the Lightning on 5-of-8 shooting with four rebounds.

STAC in the second half used seven different scorers in a 16-3 run for a 74-49 lead with 11:35 remaining.  Jordan Green had an old-fashioned three-point play and Jamal Barnes ended it with a 3-pointer.

GBC scored the next nine points in just under two minutes, closing to 74-58 with 8:47 left.  Junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) scored four points in that time.

However, Barnes canned a 3-pointer on the next possession to buoy a 17-10 run for a 91-68 margin with 2:56 left.  Vendola poured in nine points in that time.

Centeno scored 19 points to fall one short of his season high, Judge had 17 and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season with junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) adding a season-best 16 points for the Lightning (2-3).

Vendola scored 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting with five 3-pointers, Barnes netted 15 points with five triples, Kyle Pulliam poured in 13 points, Kyle Jones had 10 and 12 rebounds with Luis Risquez adding 11 points for the Spartans (5-1).

Goldey-Beacom is off until Saturday, when it faces Holy Family as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  Game time is at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm contest.
