Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt 99-92 Loss at the District of Columbia

Four players scoring in double figures, three netting at least 20 points and two getting a double-double almost was enough for Goldey-Beacom in a tough 99-92 loss at the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half rallied from 15 points down to get within 43-38 at halftime.  Freshman Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) scored 10 points, which included five during a half-ending 13-3 spurt over the final 3:37.  Junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) poured in eight points for the stanza on 4-of-9 shooting and sophomore David Aikens (Absecon, NJ), the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, netted seven.

The Lightning in the second half were in an 80-64 hole with 9:13 left before using a 19-6 run, closing to 86-83 with 2:51 to play.  Sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) scored five points in that time with Aikens, Marsh and freshman Omari Banks (Middletown, DE) adding four apiece.

Hartnel Haye's jumper gave the Firebirds an 88-83 cushion with 2:28 to go before Aikens' free throw with 1:53 left made it a four-point game.

The next possession saw GBC play outstanding defense and force UDC to hustle with the shot clock running down.  The home side amidst all the pressure finally worked the ball to Michael Aiken Jr., who canned a massive 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining to make it 91-84.

Judge went 1-for-2 from the line on the other end to get the Lightning to 91-85 with 65 seconds left.  But Haye got the ball in a quick transition for a dunk, making it 93-85 with 57 seconds to play that all but ended things.

The offensive explosion again was on display for a team that has averaged 88.7 points over its first three games, including 98.0 over its last two.  Marsh had 22 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double, Aikens had 20 and 10 for his first, Centeno amassed 20 points and six assists with Judge adding 10 points.

Goldey-Beacom (1-2) in the second half shot 57 percent (20-of-35) from the field and held UDC to 47 percent (18-of-39).

Aikens continued what already has been a great start to his career with the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold.  He now is averaging 24.0 points over his first three contests and is shooting 57 percent (29-of-51) from the floor, including 65 percent (26-of-40) from two-point range.

Aiken and Eric Morgan Jr. scored 18 points apiece with Haye adding 15 and nine rebounds for the Firebirds (1-1).
